Air Pollution Monitoring Program Support

The Air Monitoring South Section covers the southern portion of the State within the Air Quality Surveillance Branch (AQSB). Our Branch is responsible for operating and maintaining air monitoring stations throughout California. Our mission is to provide high-quality ambient air quality data that supports CARB programs, criteria pollutant reporting and public health. Our work involves close collaboration between CARB divisions, U.S.EPA and to stakeholders including local districts, researchers and the public.

 

We are seeking an Air Pollution Specialist (APS) who can apply scientific methods and principles to design, implement, and standardize air monitoring procedures across the Branch; support the collection of air pollutant samples and monitoring data; operate, maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot air monitoring equipment and work to ensure Branch compliance with both Federal and State air quality monitoring requirements. The incumbent will facilitate projects internally that support AQSB air monitoring operations across two sections and partner divisions; and externally with stakeholders and districts providing process improvements, standard operation development, staff training, and technical consultation.  

 

Other responsibilities include representing CARB with group presentations and various joint operations, as well as, sharing technical expertise, answering inquiries and preparing project protocols and reports. To additionally support the agency's mission and goals, the APS will work with management, staff teams and manufacturers to evaluate new technologies to improve ambient monitoring capabilities to qualify/quantify the extent of pollutants in California.

Working Conditions

  • The ability to climb ladders, including wall mounted rung ladders, to access rooftops.
  • Telework is available 20% of the time
  • Requires being stationary, consistent with office work, for extended periods.
