Unique Summer Opportunity-Counselor at Camp Akeela

Camp Akeela provides a unique opportunity for those interested in developing their skills and expertise in supporting children and young people on the Autism Spectrum.

With locations in Vermont and Wisconsin, Camp Akeela offers a plethora of roles. Successful candidates might find themselves as an Akeela Counselor, responsible for a small group of campers who require support in social navigation, friendship facilitation and emotional regulation. Alternatively, should candidates possess a particular skill in a program area (Arts, Sports, Waterfront, Hiking, Camping, Ropes) they may apply for the role of Program Specialist where they would design, implement and teach their activity with a focus on scaffolding social development.

Job Description:
Camp counselors (along with 3 co-counselors) are responsible for the physical and emotional safety of 8 campers in their cabin, all whom struggle socially and have challenges making and maintaining friendships. Throughout the day, their role is to identify teachable moments to help campers develop social skills and coping strategies to manage their behaviors. They also play an important role in facilitating activities during structured and unstructured times of the day. They are responsible for being with their campers the majority of the camp day, ensuring their campers follow their assigned schedule and have everything they need to be successful in each activity they are participating in. They lead group meetings every morning and evening with their bunk group. They truly act as parents, mentors, siblings, and friends to their campers on a daily basis.
