Campus Safety-Security Services Overnight Student Security Officer

The University of Iowa Department of Public Safety is looking for Student Security Officers.

ABOUT THE JOB
The University of Iowa Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) Student Security Division acts as a bridge between students and police, empowering students to play an active role in campus safety. Members of the Student Security Division support community policing culture on campus by serving as ambassadors for the department.
The Security Division employs student security officers who work in roles that are critical to the function of the institution. The Student Security Officer position at DPS is vital in helping keep campus safe. The primary focus of this role is to enhance public safety through a variety of fixed post and patrol assignments.

RESPONSIBILITIES
As a Student Security Officer you would be responsible for:
·      Patrolling residence halls and assigned buildings
·      Helping dispatch and drive the NITE RIDE service
·      Staffing athletic events and special events on campus
·      Controlling access to assigned buildings
·      Reporting any potentially suspicious situations to dispatch
·      Assisting patrons in need of emergency services

QUALIFICATIONS
As a Student Security Officer you will need to pass a background check and be a registered student during the Spring and Fall semesters. You must go through an interview process. You must be able to cover campus up to 5 miles a night depending on the assignment you choose. Student Security Officers must work at least one shift a week.
Student Security Officers must be available to work mostly overnight hours. We do not require students to work a full shift overnight. We break up the night into smaller shift lengths so students aren’t working the whole night.

BENEFITS
The Student Security Officer position starts at $11/hr and may be eligible for raises. Students pick their own schedules and can work up to 20 hours a week. DPS offers a variety of shift start times and lengths to work around student’s schedules. Depending on the assignment you choose, you may also have time to complete some homework while on duty.
Student Security has options for promotions within the division. These positions come with opportunity to learn leadership and management skills. You will also get the chance to network and meet police officers and other emergency services personnel. As a Student Security Officer, you will get the chance to build your soft skill set, such as real-world problem solving and effective verbal communication skills.
