Academic Coach - Student Disability Services (SDS)

The skills you learn in this position will help you in your chosen career path and give you valuable work experience to strengthen your resume.  You can expect to learn skills such as time management, conflict resolution, balancing priorities, interpersonal communication, and working as part of a team.  Additionally, this role will develop your ability to explain and practice various student success strategies, evaluate the needs of students and make appropriate referrals as needed, understand how their role as an Academic Coach contributes to student success, and apply effective interpersonal communication and helping skills.

BASIC FUNCTION

The Academic Coaches will work with students with disabilities to provide regular coaching sessions focusing on helping students develop strategies and skills for academic success. Academic Coaches will assist students in skill development in the following areas: executive functioning such as juggling multiple tasks and planning/prioritizing, self-advocacy for navigating their college experience, self-management for academic and career paths, and interpersonal communication skills.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Make personal and professional decisions congruent with departmental and university expectations
  • Manage time to meet the expectations and time commitment of the Academic Coaching position 
  • Keep records or notes of sessions with students
  • Assist recruitment for the Academic Coaching program 
  • Attend all required training sessions and scheduled meetings 
  • Contribute to a friendly and engaging learning environment 
  • Schedule meetings with students and maintain a work calendar
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors and students involved in the Academic Coaching program 
  • Demonstrate understanding and personal commitment to creating a welcoming and respectful environment

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have completed at least 30 semester hours
  • Registered UI Student in good conduct and academic standing
  • Demonstrate knowledge and commitment to creating a welcoming and respectful environment
  • Ability to work with students with various disabilities, learning styles, and needs
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills 
  • Working experience with computer systems
  • Must be punctual and dependable

WORK HOURS

  • This position is limited to up to 10-12 hours of direct academic coaching and 1-hour of supervision weekly
  • Available to attend virtual training dates - Date TBD

LOCATION

  • Student Disability Services - 141 University Capitol Center, 201 S Clinton St. & Virtual
