Student Assistant

Hardin Library for the Health Sciences

Department: Reference & Circulation/Public Services

# of Hours/Week: 10-12

Students will undergo training for this position.

Definition of position: Hardin Library is a center for information, may it be a textbook, a course reserve, or questions about the 24-hour study, hours, and more.  Student Assistants are prepared to be friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable about library resources.

  • Open/Close the Library 
  • Versed in “Alma”/library system to check out and return materials including books and electronic materials.
  • Attend to circulations desk (3rd floor & 1st floor) including answering patron questions, providing guidance, greeting patrons, aware of who is in the library.
  • Shelf materials
  • Work on projects including excel spreadsheets

Required Qualifications:

  • Friendly, willingness to learn, enthusiasm for position
  • Ability to problem solve, find solutions, and guide patrons
  • Clear Communication with Supervisor and co-workers

·        Must be a current student at The University of Iowa

·        Must be available to work weekend shifts.

·        Must be available to work a minimum of 6 hours per week, and 2 shifts when school is in session - specifically, 5:00 - 9:10pm, Mondays and Wednesdays.

·        Must be available to work either during Fall Interim period, Winter Interim period, or Spring Interim period.

  

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

·        Good communication skills

·        Reliable attendance history

·        Previous customer service experience, especially in a library

·        Familiarity with Excel and the Microsoft suite of products

WEEKLY WORK GUIDELINES || MINIMUMS, MAXIMUMS & REQUIREMENTS:

Maximum 20 hours per week during the academic year,

Maximum 40 hours per week during summer and academic breaks,

Minimum 6 hours over 2-shifts/2-days per week
