Position Summary 

The placement will be part of a dynamic visitor service team at the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge in Soldotna, Alaska; successfully facilitate a variety of summer camps, special events, and educational/interpretive programs; and provide accurate information to Refuge visitors.

Key Duties and Responsibilities 

Placement will assist with the preparations and facilitation of two different Kenai Refuge summer day camps (for ages 6-11; 2nd-5th graders), 50%; presenting environmental education and wildlife interpretive nature programs, 10%; assist ranger staff in visitor center, campgrounds, fishing area patrols, and roving contacts, 30%.

 

Marginal Duties 

Trail/cabin patrol work, 10%.

 

Required Qualifications 

Driver’s license

 

This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.

 

Preferred Qualifications 

Experience with public speaking.

40 per week

 

Living Accommodations 

Housing will be in 10 x 12 heated cabins (up to 4 people per cabin during summer) with a common shower house/bathroom/laundry/cooking area, located at Headquarters in Soldotna, AK. Each cabin will consist of the same gender. Bedding, towels, dishes, pots, and pans are provided. It is 1 1/2 to 2 miles into town and services. Cabins are not ADA compliant. There are 4 steps to each cabin and a gravel access area (not paved).

 

Compensation  

$350/week living allowance $1,000 one-time roundtrip travel stipend

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
