The Research Scientist Intern at Humana Healthcare Research will support research studies aimed at improving health outcomes for senior populations. This 20‑week, part‑time remote internship offers experience in study design and statistical analysis using claims and supplementary data sources to support Humana’s goals and broader public health priorities.
Through the design and implementation of various types of research studies and the strategic interpretation of data, the mission of Humana Healthcare Research (HHR) is to produce high-quality, actionable evidence and rigorous, peer-reviewed research to improve health outcomes, guide Humana’s strategy, and advance the body of knowledge for the scientific community and society at large. Areas of focus include, but are not limited to, observational and interventional health outcomes studies addressing policy, payment, and care delivery within a senior population, using integrated claims data and supplementary data sources to support Humana’s goals and broader public health priorities. HHR also maintains external partnerships with industry, government, academia and others to produce research important to internal and external stakeholders. We’re a team of research professionals passionate about combining and analyzing diverse types of primary and secondary data to extract new, actionable discoveries about our members and their health-related behaviors.
The HHR Internship is a 20-week immersive, professional research learning experience for students or recent graduates interested in pursuing a career in quantitative healthcare research. This is a part time, remote position starting in May through September. Interns will have the opportunity to apply and strengthen their research skills in a supportive environment among a multi-disciplinary team of research experts. They will contribute to studies that leverage the Humana Healthcare Research Database, which includes Medicare Advantage beneficiaries nationwide, and incorporate additional data sources to support emerging research priorities.
Responsibilities
- The HHR Intern will support research activities within the Real World Evidence team. Responsibilities will include:
- Contributing to study conceptualization and design, literature reviews, proposal writing, statistical analysis plan
- Executing statistical analysis per specifications in study protocol and under supervision of experienced research scientists
- Contribute to reporting and interpretation of results

Required Qualifications
- Completed or in-progress master’s degree or doctoral candidate in a healthcare/research-oriented field (e.g., public health, epidemiology, applied economics, public policy, outcomes research, biostatistics, health services research)
- Experience conducting observational or prospective health-related research using regression frameworks and methods that enhance comparability between groups (e.g., propensity score matching)
- Experience working collaboratively on research teams
- Experienced in writing and optimizing SQL queries and proficient in at least one statistical programing language (SAS, R/Python)
- Interest in a career in healthcare research
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with claims data research
- Experience in publishing research findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals
Travel: While this is a remote position, occasional travel to Humana's offices for training or meetings may be required.

Pay Range
The compensation range below reflects a good faith estimate of starting base pay for full time (40 hours per week) employment at the time of posting. The pay range may be higher or lower based on geographic location and individual pay will vary based on demonstrated job related skills, knowledge, experience, education, certifications, etc.
$37,440 - $96,800 per year
