Student Laboratory Technician

The Department of Pathology is currently accepting applications for a part-time Student Laboratory Technician in Anatomic Pathology. This position will, under direct supervision, perform various laboratory and clerical tasks as required in the Cytology, Histology and Surgical Pathology laboratories and within Pathology Records. Duties may involve the use of computers, laboratory equipment, and/or a variety of clerical and support tasks as needed within the area. 

 

Schedule: Exact schedule is flexible based on class schedule and student availability. Maximum 20 hours per week during the academic semester, 40 hours per week during breaks.

Flexible Shifts Available:

8:00am – 6:00pm Monday-Friday

 

*Applicants looking to work up to 20 hours/week through semester and 40 hours/week through the academic breaks (i.e., Summer, Winter) preferred.

 

Pay: $13.00/hour 

This position is located within the University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center. Health screening compliances and patient medical health record trainings will be required at the time of hire. Hands on training provided.

 

Qualifications:

  • Any combination of laboratory or clerical experience and/or post high school education equaling one year of full-time employment
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions, including laboratory procedures
  • Attention to detail and the ability to multitask  

Tasks will include (but are not limited to):

  • Filing slides and tissue cassettes in various storage locations throughout the hospital
  • Triaging receipt and return of outside referral materials
  • Cleaning and performing routine maintenance on slide stainer and various other lab instruments including digital imagers
  • Assembling slides and relevant paperwork and delivering them to Pathologists’ mailboxes
  • Replenishing supplies and reagents with the labs as well as in the FNA Clinic
  • Transporting specimens for storage and/or additional testing
  • Working closely with and assisting lab personnel, faculty, and residents/externs/fellows as requested
  • Performing special tasks as needed
