Community Mental Health Liaison - AmeriCorps Volunteer

The National Mental Health Corps is dedicated to addressing the mental health workforce crisis by expanding access to mental health education, resources, and community-based support across the country.


National Mental Health Corps AmeriCorps members serve at host sites to strengthen local mental health capacity through outreach, education, partnership development, and program support. 

At SC Empowerment Centre, this role supports the delivery and expansion of community mental health initiatives designed to promote wellness, reduce stigma, and improve access to care.

Members contribute directly to program development, community engagement, and evaluation efforts while gaining hands-on experience in mental health programming, nonprofit operations, and public service.

Key Responsibilities:

Training & Professional Development

  • Participate in all required evidence-based or evidence-informed mental health trainings provided by NMHC and the host site
  • Attend NMHC trainings, meetings, and compliance activities to ensure readiness for service

Program Support & Capacity Building

  • Support planning and implementation of mental health programming, events, and special initiatives
  • Assist in strengthening host site outreach and service capacity through ongoing projects and community-based efforts
  • Contribute to grant writing and reporting to support program sustainability and growth

Community Outreach & Education

  • Conduct outreach to increase awareness of local mental health services and resources
  • Deliver presentations, workshops, and educational sessions on mental health topics
  • Support efforts to reduce stigma and promote mental wellness in the community

Partnership Development

  • Build and maintain relationships with community organizations and mental health service providers
  • Support development of referral pathways and collaborative partnerships

Marketing & Communications

  • Assist with the promotion of programs and events through social media, flyers, newsletters, and other outreach channels
  • Support communication efforts to increase community engagement and participation

 

Qualifications:

  • Strong interest in mental health, community service, and public health
  • Understanding of mental health challenges and available resources preferred
  • Commitment to reducing stigma around mental illness and substance use disorders
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
  • Professionalism, discretion, and respect for confidentiality
  • Ability to problem-solve, adapt, and maintain a positive approach to service
  • At least an Associate’s degree required
  • Must pass required background checks
  • Reliable transportation required
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace required
  • Must provide proof of U.S. citizenship

Position Details & Benefits:

Full-time AmeriCorps service position (1,700 hours / approximately 40 hours per week)

$21,000 living stipend, paid biweekly over 22 installments

$7,395 Segal Education Award upon successful completion of service

10-month service term (with possible extension up to 12 months with approval)
