Student Technician - EEG/EMU
The Student Technician position will support the Department of Neurology’s Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) and Electroencephalogram (EEG) Lab. This position will primarily cover evening hours and includes a required every-other-weekend rotation. Staff will work a combination of scheduled shifts, including 8-hour and 4-hour evening shifts, based on unit needs.
The position involves working in the adult/pediatric EMU and/or EEG Lab and includes training to assist at the patient bedside and in intensive care units (ICU). This role will float between areas as needed.
Applicants who are available to work through the academic year and breaks (i.e., Thanksgiving, Winter, Spring, and Summer) are strongly preferred.
Responsibilities will include:
- Preparing area and materials for patient testing
- Escorting patients to and from examination rooms
- Monitoring patients in the adult/pediatric EMU and EEG Lab; may include bedside and ICU monitoring
- Maintaining the quality of electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings, including electrode adjustments and ensuring audio/video recordings are sufficient for physician and technologist review
- Assisting with research studies and maintaining accurate documentation for research patients
- Identifying clinical and electrographic events and responding appropriately, including notifying appropriate personnel
- Assisting with takedown and discontinuation of VEEG upon patient discharge
- Performing routine maintenance of equipment to ensure proper operating condition
- Collaborating with Clinical Technicians and Electrodiagnostic Technologists under direct supervision
- Working independently while completing assigned duties across adult and pediatric units
Work Environment & Expectations
This position is located within the University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center and requires access to patient data and other sensitive information, requiring a high degree of confidentiality and independent judgment. Successful applicants must be reliable, detail-oriented, and willing to assist as needed. Health care–related majors are preferred.
A background check, health screenings, and patient medical record training will be required upon hire. Hands-on training will be provided.
Scheduling & Availability Requirements
To support 24/7 operations, this position requires consistent evening and weekend availability:
Weekend Rotation
- Required to work every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday) as part of a set rotation
- Must be able to work evening shifts and up to 8-hour shifts on weekends as scheduled
Evening Shift Coverage
- Primary shifts include:
- 8-hour shift: 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM
- 4-hour shift: 7:00 PM – 11:00 PM
- Must be available to work a combination of 4-hour and 8-hour evening shifts based on scheduling needs
Additional Availability
- Ability to pick up additional weekday evening hours may be available depending on departmental needs and the student’s academic schedule
Break Coverage Commitment
- Preference for students who can maintain a consistent schedule during academic semesters and major academic breaks
Note: Student employees may work up to 20 hours per week during academic semesters and up to 40 hours per week during breaks.
Qualifications
- Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at the University of Iowa
- Strong communication skills with staff, patients, and the public
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to work scheduled evening shifts, including 4-hour and 8-hour shifts
- Availability for every-other-weekend rotation
- Experience in a healthcare setting with direct patient care is strongly preferred

$15/hour
