Classroom Literacy Tutor
       (also known as Reading Tutor with the Minnesota Reading Corps)
 
COMMUNITY ACTION OVERVIEW:
Purpose: Help children grow their reading skills, succeed in school, and build healthy relationships by serving as a classroom literacy tutor at Community Action Partnership of Ramsey & Washington Counties (Minnesota Reading Corps serves as the sponsor). Community Action Head Start is committed to providing low-income families in our community with high quality education for children ages 3-5. Help our Head Start teachers and staff in the classroom to make learning and attending school a fun and rewarding activity for children.  
 
Supervisor: Head Start - Center Education Coordinator 
 
Tasks and Responsibilities: Assist classroom teachers to support student activities and fulfill the Head Start classroom philosophy. This may include reading stories, assisting children in projects, chaperoning field trips and family fun events. Eat family-style with the children if assisting during meal-time.  

Provide a competent, stable and ongoing presence in the lives of children;
Use strategies that motivate through support, encouragement, and advocacy; and
Maintain monthly timesheet and paperwork as necessary

MINNESOTA READING CORPS OVERVIEW: 
Minnesota Reading Corps envision a future in which all Minnesota children will be proficient readers by the end of 3rd grade. Our tutors help students build these critical foundational skills through 1-1 or small group tutoring support. Tutors are trained in conducting progress monitoring assessments and research-based interventions, and will receive ongoing training and coaching support throughout the school year. All of our positions are AmeriCorps service member positions, with the AmeriCorps programs Minnesota Reading Corps.
 
Responsibilities:
1. Tutoring
Provide intentional and meaningful literacy tutoring during all parts of the day to improve the literacy of children in preschool
Assess, with high level of accuracy, child outcomes and progress using tri-annual benchmark assessments and ongoing progress monitoring assessments.
Identify students who qualify for targeted one-on-one and/or small group tutoring services based on assessment data with direction from the Internal Coach and Master Coach; develop weekly tutoring schedule.
Record student and program data completely and accurately in an online database on a weekly basis; maintain confidentiality of all student data.
Participate in on-site coaching sessions (includes observation of tutor) two times per month to review student progress, plan, problem-solve, and set goals; act on constructive feedback from coaching sessions.
2. Communication
Communicate with students in an age and developmentally appropriate way.
Act on constructive feedback provided by coaches and Program Staff.
Build professional relationships and communicate regularly with school/agency staff, Internal Coach, and the Master Coach regarding schedules, literacy strategies, student progress, etc.
3. Attendance
Regular, timely attendance during school hours Monday-Friday, along with before/after school hours as scheduled. 18, 25 or 35 hours per week.
Commitment to the entire term(s) of service, including making regular and adequate progress toward the minimum total service hours.
Attend all required Reading Corps sponsored training sessions, meetings, and coaching sessions; travel as necessary.
4. Secondary Functions
Perform assignments and/or duties as assigned by Internal Coach, Master Coach, or Program Manager, excluding activities that would displace a staff member.
Represent our programs at site-sponsored activities, meetings, and other community activities (such as Martin Luther King, Jr. Day). These may include evening and/or weekend hours.
 
Qualifications:
Must be 18 years of age or older by your start date.
Must have at least a high school diploma or equivalent by your start date.
Must be either a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States.
Must pass mandatory background checks.
Basic computer skills, including the ability to navigate online systems and email.
Speak, read, and write English fluently. (Somali, Karen, Hmong, or Spanish language skills helpful)
Ability to be patient and empathetic with students that struggle with literacy while adhering to program model.
Strong capacity to be flexible and adaptable to varied circumstances and personalities, paired with a conscientious commitment to adhere to the Minnesota Reading Corps tutoring model with consistent follow-through.
Must be able to build and maintain quality-working relationships with students, coaches, school administrators and Minnesota Reading Corps program staff.
Willingness to accept and incorporate constructive feedback from coaches and program staff.
Ability to adapt to a sometimes challenging and fast-paced environment.
Ability to attend and travel to required state and regional training sessions.
Strong personal standards of excellence, ethics and integrity.

Benefits: Biweekly living stipend from the MN Reading Corps; and Education Award (prorated from when you begin which can be credited to other family members) at conclusion of service from the MN Reading Corps. Health, accident and liability insurance when assisting 35 hours per week
Full-time - 35 hours a week:
Living stipend: $425 bi-weekly, pre-tax; Education award: $2,960
 
Part-time - 25 hours a week:
Living stipend: $299 bi-weekly, pre-tax; Education award: $2,255
 
3/day Week - 18 hours a week:
Living stipend: $227; Educational award: $1,566
