Synthego is building an automated facility that ties together custom scientific instrumentation, industrial automation, and laboratory data management to truly enable genome engineering at scale. To do so, our design team combines engineering with the sciences to solve problems that no one discipline could tackle alone.
Currently, we are seeking an Instrument Team Lead, Software Engineering for Lab Automation to join our team and help bring genome engineering solutions to the world through robotics and automation. At Synthego, you’ll deliver factory-wide automation solutions for Synthego’s growing portfolio of custom and off-the-shelf robotic liquid handling platforms. Your work will span from the lowest level sensor drivers to the highest level automation tools that orchestrate our facility’s cloud-enabled molecular biology lab.
What You'll Do
- Provide technical leadership in design and development to a team of instrument software engineers in building control systems for fully automated lab hardware.
- Direct the development of new instrument software tools
- Lead the delivery of high quality instrument software to our factory floor that enables our automated factory to operate around the clock
- Own the integration of new instrument technologies from requirements gathering to delivery on the factory floor
- Interface with interdisciplinary teams to enable rapid prototyping and release of system that involve Hardware, Instrument Software, System Engineer, Laboratory Information Management, and Scientist.
About You
- Experience leading a lab automation or instrument software team
- Strong leadership skills exemplified by the ability to motivate, hire and mentor highly technical teams whether they are a seasoned veteran or a recent college graduate
- Enjoy writing software for hardware and making robots move
- BS in Computer Science 8+ years experience or MS/PhD 4+ years experience
- Fluent with Python and Linux
- Experience integrating off-the-shelf lab instrumentation using manufacturer supplied libraries
- Familiarity with Win32 development
- Comfortable designing software for real-world electromechanical systems
- Desire to work in a fast-paced, collaborative start-up environment
- You have designed, built, tested and deployed complex automated instruments with a very high level of ownership
- Experience integrating with LIMS, SCADA, or other factory data system
Nice to Haves
- Experience building machine control and diagnostic web UIs
- Experience with wet lab instruments
- Experience with liquid handlers (Hamilton, Tecan)
- Experience with developing real-time control systems using Industrial PCs and/or PLCs
- Interested in designing solutions under an Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) framework
- PCB design, fabrication and integration experience
- Motion control experience
- Experience with C#
