ORNL Materials Irradiation Engineering Post-Master’s Research Associate

The Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD) is seeking qualified applicants for a programmatic support position. The Post-Master’s Research Associate will aid in the successful execution of ORNL irradiated materials research and development performed under the Nuclear Materials Science and Technology (NMST) group.
ORNL conducts materials science and engineering research in support of users from national labs, universities and industry to develop, characterize, and qualify advanced materials for advanced nuclear fission and fusion energy. This position will be responsible for technical project management, data compilation and analysis, and preparation of technical documents and reports to ensure the successful execution of material irradiations and post irradiation examinations (PIE). The candidate will be responsible for periodic reporting, project tracking, and cross coordination of experiments across many organizations. Other activities include organizing reactor build test matrix, QA documentation, user proposal reviews, and oversight of hot cell disassembly and PIE.
Qualifications
This position requires a highly organized, self-motivated individual with strong interpersonal abilities and effective oral and written communication skills. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of basic materials science and engineering and principles and practices of project management.
Candidates applying for this position are required to have a master’s degree in a relevant technical field, preferably in materials science and engineering. Candidates will benefit from a strong technical background in nuclear materials science. The candidate should also have knowledge of the principles of project management. Candidates must possess exceptional teamwork enthusiasm, extensive productivity computer software skills, organizational skills, strong personal motivation and the ability to adjust to changing priorities.
The ORNL Post-Master’s Research Associates Program is administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE).
