WAZA Internships
Duration: 3 months / 6 months
Location: Barcelona, Spain
Supervisor: WAZA Chief Executive Officer
Objective
The World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) is seeking dedicated individuals to serve as WAZA Interns in 2019 in the following areas:
  • Animal welfare
  • Communications
  • Conservation
  • Membership
  • Education
The WAZA Intern tasks may include, but are not limited to:
  • Zoo and aquarium outreach 
  • Zoo and aquarium documentation management
  • Photo and video management
  • Writing, editing and publication of materials
  • Website management assistance
  • Assistance in planning events
  • Support for social media and internet activities
WAZA Interns will work under the supervision of the WAZA Chief Executive Officer and relevant staff to achieve his / her objectives.
QUALIFICATIONS
WAZA Interns should have completed at least two (2) years towards a university degree (BSc. / BA or equivalent) in zoology, animal behavior, animal welfare, environmental sciences or a related field, and a minimum of one (1) year professional experience, preferably in a related field. 
COMPETENCIES
WAZA Interns should exhibit as many of the competencies listed below as possible:
  • Fluent in English. Other languages – such as French, Spanish, Chinese, Catalan and Arabic, among others – will be advantageous
  • Excellent reading, writing and summarizing skills
  • Proficiency in use of search academic engines
  • Proficiency in programs like Word, Excel, PPT
  • Strong ability to work independently and proactively
CONDITIONS
WAZA Interns will be accepted for terms of either three (3) months or six (6) months.
WAZA interns will work at the WAZA Executive Office in Barcelona, Spain.
COMPENSATION                                                                                                                               
WAZA Internships will receive 1,000 EUR per month, in addition to a food stipend of 200 EUR per month.
WAZA BACKGROUND
WAZA is the alliance of regional associations, national associations, and international zoos and aquariums that is committed to the highest possible standards of animal care and husbandry. Founded as the International Association of Directors of Zoological Gardens in Switzerland in 1935, the organization changed its name to the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) in 2000 to reflect a modern institution working on a global level to build cooperative approaches to common needs, tackle common issues, share information and knowledge and represent the community in other international forums.
WAZA offers wide-ranging resources and services to its members including:
  • Annual and specialist conferences and workshops;

  • Policy positions and strategy reflecting leading thinking in zoos and aquariums;
  • Communication on emerging zoo and aquarium issues;
  • Recognition of members and affiliates in international forums;
  • Management of studbooks and global species management programs, allowing for the professional management of animals for conservation and display;
  • Access to research findings, scientific expertise and data;
  • Advocacy and expertise in government affairs and legislative and regulatory matters at international levels such as through CITES and IUCN;
  • Resources in education, public engagement, and communications; and
  • Opportunities to increase members’ focus and impact, including grant programs and member or partner funding opportunities. 
 
WAZA is active globally, partnering with like-minded organisations. Some partners include: Wild Welfare, TRAFFIC, Convention on Biological Diversity, IUCN, Convention on Migratory Species, Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, International Zoo Educators Association, Species360, Alliance for Zero Extinction, Great Apes Survival Partnership; and the International Committee for Museums and Collections of Natural History of the International Council of Museums.
