Research Associate III - Bioinformatics and Functional Genomics - Gayther Lab

The Center for Bioinformatics and Functional Genomics at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is looking for a Research Associate III/Lab Manager to join the team. The Center brings together teams specializing in bioinformatics and computational biology, functional analysis of the genome coupled with next generation sequencing and genome editing to provide a complete pipeline for identifying the functional consequences of identified risk loci. 

The Research Associate III/Lab Manager will work in Dr. Simon Gayther’s laboratory, which is largely focused on defining the functional role of both common and rare risk variants in the development of ovarian, breast and prostate cancer. 

Managerial duties will include training lab staff on the correct use of lab equipment and following safety standards, ordering lab supplies, equipment maintenance and Tissue Culture room management. The appointed Research Associate III/Lab Manager will also work closely with other team members on generating the data for research projects focused on the identification of molecular markers associated with disease initiation, evolution and mechanisms of chemoresistance. He/She will perform both routine and complex laboratory experimental procedures, including developing cell line models of early stage disease, high throughput CRISPR/Cas9 screening of genes and genetic variants, multiplexed phenotypic analyses of generated cell line models.

Job Duties:
  • Manage BSL2 virus laboratory
  • Monitor and ensures compliance with safety standards and procedures 
  • Order lab supplies and equipment
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, arrange service and repair when needed
  • Help orient new lab members on day-to-day lab operations and procedures 
  • Assist others with and perform lab techniques
  • Maintains inventory of laboratory supplies by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies.
  • Design, organize and carry out research projects in conjunction with the Principal Investigator and/or other designated members of the research team
  • Analyze, interpret, summarize and compile data from ongoing research projects
  • Keep appropriate experimental records and documentation of ongoing research
  • Develop and perform routine and complex laboratory procedures appropriate to ongoing research projects 
  • Assist in the preparation of manuscripts and grant proposals relating to ongoing research projects
  • Present experimental findings in lab meetings as part of research discussions
Experience:
  • Three to five (3-5) years of experience in area of research specialization. Has technical skills and expertise in an area of study including, but not limited to, Molecular/Cellular Biology, Neuroscience, engineering, or mass spectometry.  
  • Experience in cutting-edge histology/imaging techniques including quantitative bright-field and fluorescence microscopy, confocal microscopy, and electron microscopy is required.  
  • Strong computer skills (MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access, PowerPoint).  
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; excellent organization skills and very detail-oriented; learns new tasks quickly; self-motivated; works well independently with minimal supervision; works well with others, and able to multitask.  
  • Strong interpersonal skills for interaction with peers, patients, physicians, and other customers of the medical center.  
  • Thorough technical and theoretical understanding of PI’s research objectives.  
  • Mastery of complex or unusual technical procedures and protocols.  
  • Ability to research, develop and implement new laboratory procedures and protocols.  
  • Knowledge of human resource and administration policies and procedures.  
  • Knowledge of budgetary requirements and policies.

Educational Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Science Degree, required. Master of Science Degree, preferred.

Physical Demands:

Able to perform moderate lifting. Able to sit, stand, and walk for prolonged periods of time. Able to operate standard office equipment. Able to exercise physical ability and perspective acuity to satisfactorily perform essential job functions.
