Postdoctoral Researcher- Environmentally Extend Input-Output Analysis

NREL is seeking a Post Doc-level researcher focused on environmentally extended input-output (EEIO) analysis. The candidate will be expected to apply new analytical approaches and advanced modeling techniques in this effort. The researcher will work with other NREL analysts and modelers as well as U.S. government representatives. The work is mainly directed towards assisting client decision making and prioritizing strategies. As a result, the position does not offer near-term publication opportunities.
Primary responsibilities of the candidate include methodology development, data gathering, generation, and processing to support the build-out of a coded and sector-specific EEIO model to address questions about the resource, economic, and environmental impacts of a growing bioeconomy. The candidate is also expected to work with the team to illustrate the developed methods in applied studies.

Additional general responsibilities include:
  • Conduct objective research that generates independent, high quality, and reproducible results
  • Assist senior researchers in the design, implementation, and reporting of the research project
  • Create technical reports, white papers, and presentations. It is expected that the delivered work will be of superior quality and will sometimes need to be delivered under aggressive timelines.
  • Work with senior staff to conceive, design and define new analytical tasks and project ideas
  • Communicate effectively and succinctly both in writing and in speaking 
  • Exhibit significant working knowledge of biomass to energy technology pathways, costs, policies and markets.

Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD in either Civil and Environmental Engineering, Engineering & Public Policy, Economics, Sustainability Science and Engineering, Process Systems Engineering, or related subjects
  • Experience in input-output modeling and analysis, experience in environmentally extended input-output modeling, material flow and balance analysis, or energy scenario modeling preferred
  • Experience in the development of tools for environmental and energy life cycle assessment
  • Strong modeling skills, Python preferred
  • Experience in working with DOE, other government agencies, and relevant industry
  • Recognized publications and technical contributions to the field
