Forestry/Ecosystem Management Aide-Lake Macbride State Park

Location: Lake Macbride State Park; 3525 HWY 382 NE, Solon, IA 52333
Title: Forestry & Ecosystem Management Aide
Duration: May 2023-August 2023; dates flexible based on school schedules.
Schedule: Monday – Friday 8am – 4:30pm; flexible.
Pay/Benefits: $12.75/hr 1st year then $14.50/hr 2nd year; covered under Workman’s Comp if injured on the job
Description:
This position would be responsible for the following duties:
1)     Maintaining tree plantings (24 acres).
a)     Rotary mowing between tree rows two-three times per summer to reduce sunlight and nutrient competition.
b)     Spraying herbicide around individual trees twice per summer to reduce weed competition.
2)     Invasive species management (44.5 acres)
a)     Utilize hand tools, chainsaws, tree pullers and herbicide treatment to remove invasive species from forest management areas and prevent regrowth. Invasive species to include honey suckle, autumn olive, oriental bittersweet, garlic mustard, multi-flora rose, and black locust.
b)     Organize volunteer help and project work days to accomplish invasive species removal and to promote educational awareness.
3)     Ecosystem management
Rotary mow prairies adjacent to woodland plots once per summer to help prevent invasion of woody, invasive vegetation. Rotary mow timber edges where invasive species are present. Rotary mow in between rows of tree plantings once per summer.
