Elementary Principal

Kalamazoo Public Schools Is Seeking
Principal for Arcadia Elementary School
10-Month, Full-Time
2019-2020 School Year

ABOUT ARCADIA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL:
Arcadia is a language center school with students from many countries speaking over a dozen languages. English language acquisition knowledge is essential for the position as well as familiarity with SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol) strategies. Differentiated instruction supports the learning needs of all students.
 
Arcadia’s administrator, teachers and staff work to improve reading instruction via a High Impact Leadership (HIL) Grant with Western Michigan University. Technology use supports core instruction and interventions in the school. Arcadia’s staff members use many strategies from the Randy Sprick’s Safe & Civil Schools program for positive behavior supports.
 
SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
Organizes and provides leadership for strong educational activities for students. Provides direction to ensure academic achievement and social growth for all students. Manages programs, leads staff and faculty to develop an optimal learning climate for the school. Provides leadership in the evaluation of the strengths and programmatic needs of the school in relation to local and district goals. Prepares and achieves high standards for quality and excellence. Effectively communicates the school's program to parents and the local community. Works effectively with PreK-12 colleagues. 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.   Provides instructional leadership to support continuous improvement through the implementation of effective instructional programs
2.   Supervises and evaluates all personnel assigned to the school
3.   Collects, analyzes and disseminates student data to inform the school improvement process as it relates to raising student achievement
4.   Assists in the recruiting, screening, recommending and retention of qualified candidates for positions on the elementary school staff and in the orientation of new personnel
5.   Plans and administers professional development activities
6.   Administers, manages and supervises the operation of the school in compliance with the Board of Education policies and procedures and the directions of the Superintendent
7.   Supervises the maintenance of accurate records on the progress and attendance of students through report cards and conferences
8.   Administers a plan for utilization of volunteers and community partners
9.   Prepares and submits requests for purchases, repairs and monitors expenditures and   
funds relative to budget
10.  Assumes responsibility for the safety and security of all students and staff
 
11. Maintains student conduct and enforces discipline in compliance with district procedures and
     according to due process rights of students
12. Performs other tasks as assigned by the Director of Elementary Education

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1.   Master’s degree in teaching, educational leadership or related field
2.   State school administrator’s certification requirements
3.   Knowledge of a foreign language
4.   Knowledge of or experience with elementary school curriculum, data analysis, performance assessment and school improvement planning
5.   Successful work history
6.   Three (3) years of successful teaching experience
7.   Experience in advancing student achievement
8.   Experience in professional written and oral communication skills
 9. Technology skills for communication, data analysis and report writing
10.  Experience in an urban or diverse setting
11. Experience utilizing Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTTS): academic as well as socio-
      emotional
     
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
1.   Possess certification in bilingual education or English as Second Language (ESL)
2.     Successful building-level administrative experience
3.   Experience applying Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) in K-5 environment
4.   Certification in bilingual education or English as a Second Language (ESL)
5.   Knowledge of Charlotte Danielson’s Framework for Teaching
6.   Knowledge of the Michigan Department of Education English as a Second Language Guide
7.   Knowledge of and willingness to learn literacy standards and best practices in the core content areas to increase student achievement
8.   Fluency in a foreign language
9.   Experience in a school where languages other than English are primary for families
10. Successful experience in a multicultural, urban school district
