Land Law Examiner Intern - BLM Summer 2020

Upon successful completion of the 11-week internship and completion of the student’s degree, the interns placed by Arab-American Business and Professional Association (ABPA) can be hired by Bureau of Land Management (BLM) through the Direct Hire Authority (DHA). DHA allows eligible individuals to be hired into federal jobs on a non-competitive basis which may lead to a fast-track full-time employment in US government agencies.
 
Job Description:
 
Agency: U.S. Department of the Interior - Bureau of Land Management
 
The incumbent will be assisting the staff of geologists, Petroleum Engineer, PET, and land law examiners to help create units for new geothermal leases and plants and issue new leases. The incumbent will assist the geologists and engineer in updating the AMFSS and GRASS database. Also the incumbent will assist the team of land law examiners in verifying that lands are available for leasing for the upcoming oil, gas and geothermal lease sales. Nevada has one of most active geothermal program in the Bureau.

In the 11 weeks, the incumbent will learn complex legal land status determinations, decision writing using plain language, and how to handle answering administrative protests, appeals, contests, and hearing actions. The incumbent will have experience in explaining the mechanics of IBLA appeals process, adjudicating federal bonds according to current laws and regulations, issuing Federal Oil and Gas and Geothermal Competitive and Noncompetitive Leases and handling both pre and post lease actions (terminations, assignments, reinstatements, etc).
 
Eligibility:
 
  • Related Majors: Business, Real Estate, Paralegal, Law, Pre-law - preferred but any degree will work
  • Must have a valid state-issued driver's license
  • Must have lived in the US for at least the past 3 years, consecutively 
  • U.S. Citizenship or Green Card Holder required
  • Must know GIS and be able to understand legal land.
