Engineering Teaching Assistants (residential summer program)

We are seeking enthusiastic teaching assistants for our summer programs for gifted students in grades 2-12. CTY offers intense, 3-week academic programs for highly talented students from across the country and around the world. Courses are held over two 3-week sessions. Staff can work one or both sessions where available.

Competitive TA candidates have advanced undergraduate coursework in engineering and physics as well as experience as tutors or teachers and experience working with young people. TA salary for six-week employment is $2540 plus housing and meals on campus at residential sites.

 

We are currently seeking teaching assistant candidates for the following courses, at the listed locations.

 

Students in grades 7-10 work in teams to solve real-world and simulated problems in the field of engineering. This study requires a synergy of mathematical knowledge, scientific thinking, and engineering design skills. This course focuses on inquiry-based, hands-on learning, allowing students to design, build, test, and redesign their own working models and prototypes. Ethical and economic considerations are considered throughout the design process, in addition to technological and scientific issues.

In this course, for 5th and 6th grades, students learn principles of mechanics; electricity and magnetism; and aerodynamics, and apply them to engineering design projects. Concepts are introduced and reinforced through hands-on activities, lectures, class discussions, and practice exercises. Students will participate in design challenges and experiments, which may include building trebuchets to learn about projectile motion, designing and launching rockets to learn about aeronautics, or constructing roller coasters to learn about energy conservation. They may also explore rocket science, orbital motion, and the challenges of space travel. Students carefully analyze data they collect and write reports about the projects.
