Elementary Music Teacher

ES Music Teacher Ad: Valley Christian Schools (CA) is currently seeking outstanding candidates for a fulltime position teaching K-4 general music and 6th grade choir. The teacher will instruct (K-6) students in weekly music classes teaching students to sing, read and notate music, play rhythm instruments, appreciate and perform music from around the world. The teacher will also assist with chapel, festivals, and lead evening concerts and musicals throughout the school year. Successful candidate will be able to enthusiastically point students to Christ through music and teach them about His creation from a Reformed perspective. Active membership in an evangelical church and agreement with the school’s Statement of Faith and Practice is required. If you would like to explore this opportunity, please submit a resume and email of interest to Rhonda Van Kampen, principal, at rvankampen@vcschools.org

Specific Grade Level Descriptions:
In grades K-3, students move to the beat, play rhythm instruments, learn to read rhythms, solfege, notate music, dance, and sing music from around the world. These skills are designed to lay a foundation for either instrumental or vocal music in the upper grades. Although we have a secular music curriculum (Spotlight on Music by Macmillan/McGraw-Hill), it is taught from a Christian perspective. (Ex. Why do we learn music in different languages or from different continents? God loves and created all people.) These students also present evening musicals based on Biblical truths.
In grade 4, students learn to play the recorder. The recorder instruction helps improve music-reading skills and prepares them to play a musical instrument. These students also work on vocal skills and present one evening musical throughout the school year.
In 6th grade choir, students learn about proper singing posture, singing exercises, how to “build” good tone, sight singing, matching pitch, and beginning part-singing. These students perform in the Fine Arts Festival, two school concerts (along with the band and orchestras) and 6th Grade Promotion. All students in grades K-4 and 6th grade choir are taught a hymn-of-the-month to praise God and keep a Christ centered focus in music.

 Qualifications:
  1. A bachelor’s degree in Teaching (K-8) with emphasis in Music or degree in Music with emphasis in Teaching from an accredited college or university.
  2. A signed Doctrinal Statement and Moral Integrity Clause of Valley Christian Schools
  3. Active member of an anchor church (exceptions made only by the Board of Directors).

  5. Demonstrated ability to teach and lead children well in music (ability to read music, conduct children’s choir, play piano and/or guitar, and play recorder).
