Internship-Research Assistant/Lab Technician

USARIEM is internationally recognized as the DoD's premier laboratory for Warfighter health and performance research and focuses on environmental medicine, physiology, physical and cognitive performance, and nutrition research. Military guidance has been published for operations in heat, cold, and high-altitude environments and nutrition for health and performance. The Institute is organized into five divisions: Biophysics and Biomedical Modeling, Military Nutrition, Military Performance, Thermal and Mountain Medicine, and Research Support. By leveraging its unique capabilities and facilities with industry, academia, and the government, USARIEM produces a variety of important products, including performance optimization doctrine, preventive medicine and planning doctrine, materiel development support, physiological monitoring strategies and predictive algorithms, and Health Hazard Assessments.
The intern will assist with multiple research projects and perform the following research: 1) assist in set-up and clean-up of equipment for research experiments; 2) collect data during human trials; 3) process human biological samples; 4) learn and perform laboratory techniques, e.g., flow cytometry; 4) participate in data entry and data analysis; 5) conduct searches of the scientific literature; and 6) assist in the writing and editing of research presentation and oral reports. 

Appointment Length
This ORISE appointment is for a 4 month period. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

Participant Benefits
Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by USARIEM. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
 
Qualifications
Coursework in biology, biochemistry and statistics (3.0 minimum GPA). Prior basic laboratory experience (e.g., pipetting and laboratory safety) will be viewed favorably. Enthusiasm in gaining experience in human research is a plus.
