Title: (3) Regional Trail Crew Team Member, (1) Regional Trail Crew Leader
Position Type: Seasonal appointment. Full time (40 hours/week). 6/1/2020 – 9/4/2020 (Period Flexible)

Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 am - 4:00 pm
Compensation: Crew Members - $11.90/Hour Crew Leader - $13.57/Hour

Position Description:
The Saratoga-Capital District Region of NYS Parks is hiring 4 seasonal trail stewards to form a regional Trail Crew. The Trail Crew will consist of 3 crew members and 1 crew leader. While working under the supervision of the Regional Conservation Coordinator this regional trail crew will help maintain, restore and construct trails in NY State Parks across six counties in the Saratoga Capital-District region.

Position Locations:
Position is based out of Saratoga Spa State Park, and travel will be required within the Saratoga capital-district region state parks. A vehicle will be provided for any travel within parks. No overnights are expected.

Duties & Responsibilities:
❖ Perform a variety of technical and semi-skilled trail maintenance.
❖ Restore existing trails in New York・s state parks
- Build erosion control structures such as water diversions, check damns, water bars, etc.
- Construct trail structures to add to trail usability and avoid impacts to sensitive habitats
- Add tread features, such as bench cuts, to improve tread surface for hikers.
❖ Construct new trails in New York・s state parks
- Establish new, sustainable trail tread
- Design and construct trail sections when re-routes of existing trails are deemed necessary
- Use of sustainable trail design standards
❖ Constructing trail features to prevent erosion and habitat degradation
- Designing and building stone retaining walls
- Designing and building timber bridges, turnpikes, and boardwalks
❖ Securely and safely decommission trails deemed to be no longer in the interest of the park
❖ Educating the general public and hikers that you encounter about the work being done.

Minimum Qualifications:
❖ Must be at least 17 years old.
❖ Must have a valid drivers・ license.
❖ Must be available for all trainings as required.
❖ Regular, full time attendance is required.
❖ Must be able to preform physically demanding work for extended periods of time.

Preferred Qualifications:
❖ Prior experience working on a trail crew is strongly desired.
❖ Capable, with instruction, safely using a variety of hand and/or power tools (shovels, mattocks, rock bars, electric drills, grip hoist, rock nets etc.)
❖ Ability to safely operate and maintain tools and equipment.
❖ Capable of lifting loads up to 50 lbs.
❖ Ability to perform backcountry work, while maintaining a good attitude, in rough terrain in summer conditions.
❖ Must demonstrate teamwork and display high standards of ethical conduct.
❖ Ability to produce quality work in a timely manner.
❖ Remain flexible and professional if the daily duties and responsibilities are altered.
❖ First Aid and CPR certification desired.
❖ Orienteering and Leave No Trace experience a plus.
