Our Water Quality Program is looking to hire an Environmental Engineer at our Central Regional Office in Union Gap, WA

This position is responsible for planning, investigating, and proposing solutions to stormwater engineering problems to grant recipients and municipal permittees so that their stormwater projects are effectively implemented.

We are looking for a candidates who can independently assess a wide variety of community waste water and water quality facility needs.

Duties

The mission of the Water Quality Program is to protect and restore Washington's waters to sustain healthy watersheds and communities. Our work ensures that state waters support beneficial uses including recreational and business activities, supplies for clean drinking water, and the protection of fish, shellfish, wildlife, and public health.
 
The Water Quality Program is responsible for regulating discharges of pollutants to surface and ground waters by writing and managing wastewater and stormwater discharge permits, enforcing water quality laws, developing water quality standards and identifying water bodies that fail to meet those standards, and providing technical and financial assistance to appropriate entities to help them protect and restore Washington's waters.

What does this Environmental Engineer do?
This position serves as the section's lead engineer, including serving as the Central Region's engineering specialist for small communities. This position:
  • Reviews and provides final approval of municipal and industrial engineering reports, construction plans and specifications for wastewater treatment facilities to ensure compliance with state and federal water quality laws and regulations.
  • Provides engineering and technical expertise for development of wastewater discharge permits and discharge limits, sampling and testing schedules and compliance schedules for wastewater treatment. 
  • Reviews comprehensive sewer plans, and State Environmental Review Process reports for compliance and conformance with applicable State and Federal laws.
  • Provides engineering support and proposal rating for grant and loan applications. 
  • Serves as the section lead for water reuse projects.
  • Plans and performs annual inspections of assigned facilities.Prepares technical inspection reports to support agency regulatory activities and to advise permittees of permit compliance status.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

A Master's degree with major study in one of the following engineering fields, sanitary water resource, civil, geotechnical, environmental, chemical, mechanical, or related field AND Registration as a Professional Engineer in the state of Washington or another state based on registration requirements equivalent to those in Washington AND four years of experience in environmental engineering

OR 

An Engineer-In-Training Certificate or a Bachelor's degree with a major study in one of the following engineering fields, sanitary, civil, geotechnical, water resource, environmental, chemical, mechanical or related field AND Registration as a Professional Engineer in the state of Washington or another state based on registration requirements equivalent to those in Washington AND five years of experience in environmental engineering.   

A Ph.D. in one of the above engineering fields will substitute for two years of the environmental engineering experience. 

NOTE: Requirements for registration as a Professional Engineer in the state of Washington are eight years of professional experience (which may include up to four years of college-level engineering education) and successful completion of sixteen hours of professional licensing exams. Applicants qualifying through the licensing equivalency option must achieve registration as a Professional Engineer in the state of Washington within six months of appointment to this class.
