Souls Grown Deep Internship

The Souls Grown Deep Foundation began offering a grant program beginning in 2019. Successful applicants are afforded the opportunity to work alongside curators, conservators, educators, and administrators and gain experience in museum work in general. This Program is designed to provide students of color with the opportunity to work in a professional setting and gain valuable experience in the museum field.

Each year, three leading art museums throughout the country will host an Intern during the academic school year. Each Intern will be awarded a $10,000 stipend by the Souls Grown Deep Foundation. This Internship will also include a trip to Atlanta to visit the Foundation offices to meet with artists and communities that the Foundation serves in the Southeast region. The trip will be planned over a weekend in the Fall of 2019.

The Mellon Foundation’s pioneering study on the challenges of diversifying museum staff pointed to the need to support students at the undergraduate level, to encourage the pursuit of graduate education. Our program will offer yet another avenue for students of color to develop a professional museum background in our emerging field through any one of a number of arenas: curatorial, registrarial, conservation, education, or administration.

The BMA is proud to host one Intern from this exceptional Program for the duration of the 2019-2020 academic year. The Intern will work within the Director’s Office and gain experience working with Board of Trustee members, donors, and artists. They will be exposed to the high level of professionalism and museum stewardship that comes through that office.

This Program is designed for students interested in exploring professions related to the museum field and visual arts.

• Applicants must have completed a minimum of two years of academic coursework and be in good academic standing

• An interest in art and art history is preferred but students of all majors are encouraged to apply

• Priority will be given to rising Juniors and Seniors, enrolled in accredited undergraduate programs

• Priority will be given to students of color, from underrepresented backgrounds

• Essay: Please explain your goals for this Internship and what you hope to gain from your experience at the Baltimore Museum of Art. Please also state what you hope to contribute and achieve through your participation in the Souls Grown Deep Internship Program. Maximum of 800 words.

• Resume: Please include all Internship and work experience, relevant academic courses, computer proficiencies, and language skills.

• Letter of Recommendation: The Letter of Recommendation must be sent confidentially and separately from other application materials, directly from the recommender. It should be sent from their professional e -mail address and clearly indicate the applicant’s name in the subject line. Suggestions for who is appropriate to write this letter include faculty, academic advisors, past/present supervisors, etc. Please be sure they send this document to the above e-mail address.
