Volunteer Teaching Artist

ASTEP Volunteer Teaching Artists at the 2019 Art-In-Action Summer Camp will be primary classroom teachers for Theatre and Music classes!


ASTEP Volunteer Teaching Artists will join a local team from enFAMILIA - a community organization that builds healthy family relationships among immigrant, migrant, and farm worker communities of South Florida - for 4 week arts-based summer camp in Homestead, Florida from June 17th - July 13th! ASTEP Volunteer Teaching Artists will lead classes and large group activities, assist in camp management, and truly be a part of the life of this Florida community. Travel, food, and housing are provided for all ASTEP Volunteer Teaching Artists as a part of this camp.

ASTEP Volunteer Teaching Artists at AIA must have experience in teaching students between the ages of 6 and 15. This position requires complete commitment, and artists must be available for all training and camp days.


Training Dates: June 12th - June 16th, 2019

Camp Dates: June 17th - July 13th, 2019


ASTEP Volunteer Teaching Artists will teach seven (7) hours per day, and should plan to spend at least nine (9) hours per day on site.


ASTEP Volunteer Teaching Artists responsibilities include:

  • Curriculum building and lesson planning for three (3) classes, each to meet daily. Lesson planning and teaching may take place with a co-teacher or alone.
  • Planning and teaching age-appropriate lessons that focus on the development of soft skills.
  • Planning and leading large group activities such as warm ups, journal prompts, or closings.
  • Preparing a 2-4 minute performance piece in each class, or for visual art preparing a showcase of student artwork, to be shared at the closing performance.
  • Regular collaboration and communication with enFAMILIA and ASTEP staff members for a cohesive camp experience.
  • Support and implementation of camp-wide behavior management techniques in the classroom.
  • Support and implementation of ASTEP methodology and pedagogical techniques in the classroom.
  • Implementation of ASTEP and enFAMILIA evaluation tools in the classroom.
  • Full participation in ASTEP and enFAMILIA training sessions.
  • Full participation in ASTEP and enFAMILIA post-program surveys.
