The Air Quality Program (AQP) is looking to fill a Greenhouse Gas Engineering Specialist (Environmental Engineer 2) (In-Training) position. This position will be located in our Headquarters Building in Lacey, WA.
The Greenhouse Gas Engineering Specialist position conducts engineering analyses of facilities covered by the GHG reporting program. The position reviews and analyzes emissions and compliance data submitted to the agency for a variety of facilities and processes to confirm quality and accuracy. Additionally, the position collaborates with IT staff, with ongoing product testing and feedback, to support application development to track and reduce GHG emissions. The position assures accurate accounting of GHGs in the state, a key step in minimizing air pollution to safeguard public health and the environment. This is a great opportunity to learn about the engineering processes used in a variety of industries and an opportunity to develop knowledge on the intersection between engineering, law, and policy.

Duties
The mission of the Air Quality Program (AQP) is to protect, preserve, and enhance the air quality and the environment of Washington for current and future generations.
The Climate Policy Section uses a collaborative, balanced workload approach to assign projects and associated tasks. This position requires flexibility, adaptability, and a willingness to play various roles across projects. This position plays a key role in identifying and verifying greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Some of the key work activities of the Greenhouse Gas Engineering Specialist position are:
- Reviews and audits greenhouse gas emission reports from a variety of industries.
- Conducts technical analyses to implement laws and rules.
- Communicates regularly, by phone and email, with facility engineers.
- Ensures accurate accounting of greenhouse gas emissions, the first step toward reducing emissions and combating climate change.

The goal class for this position is an Environmental Engineer 2 (EE2). We will consider applicants who meet the requirements for the Environmental Engineer 1 and 2 levels. If the finalist meets the requirements for the EE 1 level then they will be hired in at that level and will be placed into a training program to become an EE 2 within a specified period of time.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
To qualify at the Environmental Engineer 1 level (pay range 55, $4,250-$5574):
A Master's degree with a major study in one of the following engineering fields: sanitary, water resource, civil, geotechnical, environmental, chemical, mechanical, or related engineering field.
OR
An Engineer-In-Training Certificate or a Bachelor's degree with a major study in one of the following engineering fields: sanitary, water resource, civil, geotechnical, environmental, chemical, mechanical, or related engineering field
AND
One (1) year of environmental engineering experience.
To qualify at the Environmental Engineer 2 level (pay range 61, $4,929-$6,468):
A Master's degree with a major study in one of the following engineering fields: sanitary, water resource, civil, geotechnical, environmental, chemical, mechanical, or related engineering field
AND
One (1) year of experience in environmental engineering.
OR
An Engineer-In-Training Certificate or a Bachelor's degree with a major study in one of the following engineering fields: sanitary, water resource, civil, geotechnical, environmental, chemical, mechanical, or related engineering field
AND
Two (2) years of environmental engineering experience.
Desired Qualifications:
Expertise or advanced knowledge in one or more of the following production processes:
- Petroleum refining
- Natural gas distribution
- Metal, glass, or cement manufacture
- Pulp and paper production
- Landfill operations
- Chemical manufacture
