Biological Field Technician - Post Construction Monitoring

Western EcoSystems Technology, Inc. (WEST), a dynamic medium size consulting firm with offices across the United States, is looking for a full-time temporary Biological Field Technician located out of Worth County, Iowa.
 
Since 1990, WEST has grown to be one of the premier environmental and statistical consulting firms in the United States. WEST has a permanent core of professionals with broad experience in basic and applied ecological studies and the sophisticated analysis of natural resource data.
 
Job Summary:
The successful candidate for this position will be able to work independently with the ability to communicate and coordinate effectively with WEST supervisors and clients, have previous experience being able to identify regional birds by sight and sound, and have had experience working in extreme weather conditions and navigating rough terrain.
 
Responsibilities include: 
• Conduct standardized fatality searches beneath wind turbines to locate bird and bat fatalities
• Follow field and data entry protocols
• Use compass, Global Positioning System devices, range finder, binoculars, and android tablets for data entry

Project Length: May 1, 2019 – October 31, 2019 with the possibility of extension
Compensation: $14-16/per hour DOE
Schedule: 30-40 hours per week varying on project and seasonal workload
Additional Details: Field housing will be provided. Vehicle will be provided or mileage will be reimbursed 

Requirements: 
• Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Resources, Wildlife Management, Wildlife Biology, or an equivalent degree preferred
• Candidates experienced in field bird identification will be given preference
• Skilled use of maps, compass, GPS unit, and other field equipment is required
• Must be able to work independently and in small groups, and interact positively with project managers, clients, land landowners, and other technicians
 
Physical Requirements:
• Applicants must be in good physical shape and able to hike at a measured pace throughout the day as surveys will be conducted in locations where temperatures and conditions can be extreme
• Must be equipped with suitable footwear (steel-toed boots), clothing (long pants and shirts with sleeves), and binoculars 
 
Successful candidates must be able to pass a background check; a pre-employment drug screen; and a DMV records check that meets WEST’s minimum criteria to operate a motor vehicle on behalf of the company. A valid driver’s license will be required. Candidates must adhere to all health and safety requirements.
