The NYC Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) protects and enhances the daily economic lives of New Yorkers to create thriving communities. DCA licenses more than 81,000 businesses in more than 50 industries and enforces key consumer protection, licensing, and workplace laws that apply to countless more. By supporting businesses through equitable enforcement and access to resources and, by helping to resolve complaints, DCA protects the marketplace from predatory practices and strives to create a culture of compliance. DCA’s External Affairs division is seeking interns who are interested in pursuing a career in public relations, government relations, community relations, communications or related fields to provide high-level support within the team. External Affairs is responsible for advancing the agency’s mission through its relationships with key stakeholders such as elected officials, government agencies, community and faith-based organizations, business improvement districts, and everyday New Yorkers. All candidates should have a strong academic record, be highly organized with a keen attention to detail, possess the ability to manage multiple tasks and most importantly have a commitment to excellence.
 
Responsibilities
 
Under the supervision of the Director of Community Affairs the interns will assist the team with a number of meaningful projects and learning opportunities including:
 
·        Assist with the planning and execution of the agency’s community outreach
·        Research of policy initiatives and engagement models
·        Liaise with elected officials, community partners, and senior leadership team members
·        Provide administrative support and assist in special projects as needed.
 
*This internship is open to undergraduate students (preferably business, pre-law, government, public policy, and administration majors).
Qualifications
·        Outstanding organizational skills, self-motivated and team-oriented
·        Excellent written, verbal, and phone communication skills
·        Strong Research and computer skills required
·        Ability to take direction well and work in a fast paced environment
·        Punctual and professional demeanor in diverse contexts
