Staff Accountant

The Staff/Property Accountant primary responsibility is to record the daily accounting for a portfolio of properties. This position prepares journal entries, work papers, account reconciliations and other summary reports to support and for presentation in the financial statements. 

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES: 
  • Responsible for the daily accounting for a portfolio of properties. Completes work papers in the following areas: real estate tax, CAM, insurance, rental income, other property income and non-recoverable expense. 
  • Reviews the balance sheet and income statement to ensure all transactions are recorded appropriately and timely. Analyzes and understands fluctuations in account balances and identifies variance drivers. 
  • Prepares and reviews documentation and records journal entries for acquisitions and dispositions of real estate. 
  • Ensures compliance with internal controls and recommends additional policies and procedures to enhance controls. 
  • Reconciles fixed asset additions, calculates depreciation (GAAP and tax basis) and prepares a fixed asset roll forward. 
  • Responsible for monitoring debt for the portfolio. This includes reviewing monthly debt service payments, preparing debt compliance reports and calculating debt service coverage ratios. 
  • Prepares and analyzes reports for monthly internal reporting package. This includes preparing supporting information for SEC filings. 
  • Other duties as assigned.
 
QUALIFICATIONS: 

Education: This position requires a Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) in accounting or finance from a four-year college or university or equivalent professional knowledge and/or work experience. 

Experience:
This position requires 0 to 6 years of prior professional experience in accounting, preferable in a real estate environment. 

Skills: 
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Excel are required for this position. 
  • • Knowledge of JD Edwards and Yardi (or comparable general ledger software program) are preferred for this position. 
  • • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
