Internship: Renewable Fuels Research Operations

  • Support technical Research and Development (R&D) activities within the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF) by performing routine laboratory work.  Capable of following procedures and directions by staff.   Perform all work in accordance with NREL's high safety standards.
  • Provide support to R&D projects and engineering staff within Renewable Fuels laboratories of NREL’s ESIF.  Follow clearly detailed procedures and directions for supporting the work delivery and performance of experiments on the hydrogen and renewable natural gas (RNG) systems.  Perform basic tasks to help implement improvements to ESIF capabilities, operate systems and keep accurate and detailed records. Maintain a clean, safe and organized working environment.

Specific duties include:
  • Perform routine laboratory tasks under the guidance of engineering staff such as preparing drawings, analyzing data, assisting with the repair and maintenance of equipment set-up and perform routine experimental operations.
  • Collect, analyze and prepare data for reporting to clients such as the Department of Energy and Southern California Gas Company.
  • Restock and order laboratory supplies available from the stockroom
  • Conduct work safely and support NREL’s EHS&Q policies.
  • Provide laboratory assistance or assistance for any other special requests when needed.

Additional Qualifications

  • Clear communication skills and demonstrated ability to work as part of a larger research team.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a clean, safe and organized working environment. 
  • Ability to perform duties with minimal supervision after training.
  • Completion of multiple college level engineering, chemistry or biology courses. 
  • Familiar with laboratory work and to be knowledgeable about and comply with the Environment, Health, and Safety (EH&S) requirements.
