Internship: Electricity System (Hydro focused) Analyst


The candidate will support a variety of tasks related to renewable energy market and policy analyses in NREL's Strategic Energy Analysis Center. The successful candidate will have strong research and writing skills as well as experience compiling and manipulating large data sets for analysis. 
The intern will work with research staff on electricity system modeling in order to explore the role and value of hydro, including pumped storage hydro.
Some programming knowledge is necessary but some on-the-job learning is also expected.
Possible key projects include:

  • Support analysis work examining the impacts of proposed pumped storage hydro projects on the electricity system.
  • Collaborate with other national labs in production cost model set up, validation and date sharing
  • Post-process large electricity grid simulations. This includes setting up good quality control procedures and high impact visualizations of the results for publication.

Requirements:
  • Must be enrolled in a degree earning program or have graduated from one in the past several months
  • Student must have a 3.0 or higher GPA

Preferred Background:
  • Background using PLEXOS software, R, and/or Python as well as knowledge of transmission-level grid integration issues, hydropower, thermal power plants, or electricity load modeling is helpful
