Injury and Performance Epidemiology Including Assistance with Research Project Coordination

USARIEM is an internationally recognized research center of excellence for Warfighter performance science and its useful applications. The 50-year old+ Institute functions as a world-class laboratory for environmental medicine, physiology, health, performance and nutrition research. Research studies are conducted by scientists from four research divisions, working in concert with one another, as well as in collaboration with other world-class scientists from government, industry and academia. Research divisions are: Biophysics & Biomedical Modeling (BBMD), Military Nutrition (MND), Military Performance (MPD), Thermal & Mountain Medicine (TMMD). https://www.usariem.army.mil/

The individual will participate with a team of epidemiologists and Army personnel within the Total Army Injury and Health Outcomes Database (Military Performance Division) to collate, organize, and analyze information on health outcomes including injury and physical performance, as well as on related programs centered around Soldier performance and readiness. Specifically, the candidate will assist in the data management steps required for the integration of several different Army population-level databases into a unified databases. The candidate would participate in several projects requiring the analysis of these databases to assist in program evaluation and to answer research questions. The candidate will need to possess skills in databases management and statistical analysis using SAS, have studied design knowledge and understanding. the ability and willingness to collect data in-person (which may require travel) and have strong writing skills to assist in manuscripts preparations.

Appointment Length
This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

Participant Benefits
Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by USARIEM. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
 
Qualifications
The candidate should possess a Master's of Public Health or a Master's of Epidemiology degree with emphasis on epidemiology and/or biostatistics. Candidates with experience with project management as well as programming within the statistical software program SAS, which includes statistical analyses and basic database management, will be viewed more favorably. The candidate should have a general knowledge of basic statistics, i.e., how to use descriptive and analytical statistics for cohort, population, and case control studies and covering skills such as t-test, ANOVA,nonparametric testing, and study design; as well as linear regression, logistic regression, and survival analysis experience. More advanced knowledge of statistics is preferred. Familiarity with healthcare, fitness, and the military are helpful.

Other preferred skills as well as skills to be developed will include research project management, database management and statistical analysis using SAS. A candidate should have study design knowledge and understanding, the ability and willingness to collect data in-person and coordinate project execution in-person (which may require travel), and have strong writing skills to assist in manuscript preparation.
