Research Scientist in Neurosciences

SUMMARY / DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Huntington Medical Research Institutes (HMRI) is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving lives through patient-focused scientific research. Our brand-new state of the art laboratory anchors the biomedical corridor on Fair Oaks in Pasadena. Our scientists' research focuses on the connection between the brain and heart, developing diagnostic tools to help treat common diseases of these vital organs that affect every family.
 
HMRI seeks a mid-career level scientist with expertise in neurology and neurosciences to set up an independent research program at HMRI. Late assistant professor level or early associate professor level investigators. Must have an MD, or PhD or MD, PhD degree. Must have a record of publications in peer reviewed journals and have some level of grant funding, preferably from the NIH or other federal or state agency. Must be willing to collaborate with other scientists in the institution. We are seeking a candidate with excellent communication skills who can speak to both a scientific audience as well as a non-scientific audience. Emphasis is on scientific integrity, transparency and rigor. If an MD seeking to carry out clinical research, must have a valid California medical license. A competitive start up package will be offered.
 
The Research Scientist position will carry out independent as well as collaborative or small preclinical research in the neurology and neurosciences field (with Dr. Michael Harrington’s group). We prefer work on translational studies with potential for new therapies.
 
This position reports to the Chief Science Officer, Dr. Robert Kloner; and primarily be based at both 686 South Fair Oaks Avenue and 734 Fairmont Street.
 
The Research Scientist is expected to attend staff meetings, research conferences when possible and investigator meetings (usually held once a month). 
 
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. 
 
·        Doctoral Degree (MD or PhD or MD, PhD) or equivalent, with more than five years of related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience;
·        Track record of independent research funding, preferably NIH, DOD, and other grants;
·        Computer skills required (Microsoft Office). Use of Computers to collect various data sets; must know power point, excel spreadsheets, statistical analyses;
·        Must have extensive experience with small animal models of neurologic disease and/or experience with in vitro cell-based models, molecular biology, and in genetics;
·        A history of publications with at least ten (10) original peer-reviewed manuscripts;
·        Excellent general knowledge of neuroscience research; 
·        Must be willing to serve on some administrative committees;
·        Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with colleagues and prospects, building respect, consensus and trust across reporting lines; and
·        The Research Scientist also performs a wide range of job duties as assigned and requested.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Must be able to supervise one (1) technician, postdoctoral fellows, and students.
