Water Innovation Research Internships

Current sources and de-risks innovative water tech solutions for industries, utilities and investors, and connects innovators to opportunities. Whether a stakeholder develops, uses, or invests in water tech solutions, becoming a member of Current will help them create value, improve performance and deliver results. Launched in 2016 as a partnership of the City of Chicago, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, and World Business Chicago, Current is a non-profit based in Chicago that leverages the city’s world-class utilities, research institutions, industries and innovation community to improve global environmental and economic impact.
 
Current is seeking two summer interns one will be engineering-focused and one will be policy/program-focused. The Current Water Innovation Research Interns will contribute to Current’s mission through a variety of different projects and tasks, such as:
·      Water technology research and assessment
·      Research and analysis on emerging scientific, engineering and economic issues that impact the water sector
·      Development and implementation of new projects related to nutrient management, monitoring/control of water contaminants and water infrastructure finance
 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

·      Research and Analysis: Support existing programs through research and analysis
·      Project Development: Assist in developing and implementing projects related to advanced research, technology demonstration and commercialization
·      Database Research and Management: Support the development and use of Current’s database of water technologies to identify innovative solutions for municipal and industrial members
·      Outreach and Communications: Develop strategic communications content, including social media posts/schedules and press releases, and support events that bring together stakeholders from community groups, research institutions, startups, industry leaders and utilities
 

Required Qualifications

·      Intern 1: Active student in BS/MS engineering program preferred (civil, environmental, chemical, mechanical), or BS/MS policy/urban planning program
·      Intern 2: Active student in MBA/MS sustainability/marketing/communications program preferred, or BA/BS in sustainability/marketing/communications program
·      1-3 years of experience or background in science, technology, or economics/business desirable
·      Aptitude for, and interest in, applied water research, technology development, sustainable solutions, and/or commercialization of technology
·      Ability to work independently and self-guide work
·      Strong writing, verbal communication and presentation skills
·      Experience in a start-up or entrepreneurial environment desired
·      Proficient in Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Office products
 
The Current Water Innovation Research Interns will work on a part-time basis of a minimum of 15 hours per week for approximately 15 weeks from June through August 2019. Interns will receive a stipend in biweekly installments depending on the number of hours worked.
