Environmental Health Sanitarian - Entry or Senior (Recreation & Retail Emphasis)

The Department of Agriculture Trade and Consumer Protection is seeking to fill an Environmental Health Sanitarian - Entry/Senior position to work in our Division of Food and Recreational Safety, Bureau of Food and Recreational Businesses.

This field based position is headquartered and conducts work within the following areas:

Barron, Burnett, and Washburn Counties

The State of Wisconsin benefits package includes 3.5 weeks of leave time to start, 9 paid holidays, accrued sick leave, multiple insurance options, and an exceptional retirement plan.Position Summary:  This position is responsible for enforcement of food and health safety laws, administrative codes, regulations, and standards governing all dairy, food safety, and recreational licensing programs under the authority of Wisconsin Statutes. Duties include: on-site evaluation, inspection, and documentation of sanitary conditions and durability of facilities, equipment, and/or product; application of codes and statutes; providing technical consultation and educational services to internal and external stakeholders. Based upon evaluation and/or inspection findings and preparation of reports, subsequent enforcement action may be warranted including the ability to issue or deny licenses, or in some instances, issue closure orders when an imminent health threat is found.

Evaluation and inspection locations may include: permanent, mobile, and temporary restaurants; recreational-educational camps; campgrounds; vending operations; public swimming facilities; and other establishments subject to Wisconsin licensure; private water supply or sewage disposal systems; and municipal or well water supply systems. The incumbent will also coordinate with other technical specialists as well as state and federal agencies to investigate consumer complaints, food or recreational emergencies, and food or waterborne illness outbreaks.

Special Notes:   

Position involves routine and extended travel throughout the State, including the need for flexibility with schedule changes.

Valid driver’s license or the ability to provide one’s own transportation for work purposes is also required.

Physical Demands

Sanitarian work requires lifting up to 50 pounds; thorough use of sight and hearing to observe physical surroundings; ability to climb and work at elevated heights such as on catwalks; as well as sitting, standing, walking, and bending for extended periods of time. Candidate must also have the ability to complete outdoor job activities the entire 12 months of the year which may include inclement weather and extreme temperatures.
