Great River Energy is seeking a Sr. Portfolio Modeler to lead, design, perform, interpret and communicate analyses and modeling for short and long term power supply portfolio planning. Provide input to the organization’s strategies on generation resources and evolving grid-scale and distributed energy resource technologies and capabilities. Develop analytic study structures and manage analytic tools and processes. Work across the organization to identify and determine impacts of load forecast and resource changes, including impacts of the MISO market and emerging technologies like storage, on Great River Energy’s portfolio.
 

Responsibilities

  •  Coordinate and execute short term and long term resource planning analytics. Structure sensitivities and evaluations based on the organization’s strategies and planning needs.
  •  Manage on-going development and maintenance of model database and input assumptions to support GRE modeling requirements.
  •  Specify and operate models to support scenario-based planning needs and initiatives.
  •  Interpret, synthesize and convey modeling and analyses results into summary reports, figures and briefing materials for leadership to guide strategy and consideration of resource options. 
  •  Prepare and communicate results of planning analyses to be used in long-range financial planning, strategic planning, GRE’s Integrated Resource Plan, and other regulatory filings.
  •  Track, analyze and optimize utilization of renewable energy certificates in collaboration with division staff and leadership.
  •  Lead team of cross-functional analysts to identify future grid opportunities, mine data, and evaluate future resource investment options.
  •  Conduct sensitivity analyses on determining the value of shaping the load curve, including MISO market impacts. 
  •  Evaluate integrated grid impacts of alternative resource options, including energy efficiency, demand response, distributed generation, storage, transmission development, distribution planning, and consumer options.
  • Develop methods of visualizing data to inform decision makers on portfolio options and future grid initiatives.
  •  Research, interpret, and apply resource-based regulatory requirements and state energy policy goals in modeling and analyses, including renewable energy standards (RES), greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, carbon-reduction goals, and future grid targets.
  • Act as a key resource to other divisions and departments within GRE by adding value as an expert analyst.

Qualifications

Knowledge typically acquired through a four-year degree in engineering, mathematics, statistics, or economics. Masters’ Degree preferred. Five years of energy industry experience required. Project management skills required. Very strong research, analytical, organizational, and communication skills required. Experience acquiring, maintaining, verifying and communicating data required. Experience with utility optimization, expansion modeling, and/or wholesale electricity market modeling strongly preferred. Certified Energy Manager (CEM) preferred.
 
  • Expert knowledge of and proficiency conducting utility planning modeling and analysis, preferably using Encompass, EGEAS, System Optimizer, Strategist, PROMOD or similar software.
  • Knowledge of utility-scale generation resources and storage assets including technical capabilities, limitations, and operational profiles within wholesale electric markets (i.e. MISO, PJM, SPP, etc.).
  • Ability to interpret and effectively communicate modeling and analytical results, and to convey complex technical analyses to leaders and others across the organization.
