Gigafactory 1 Production Engineering (Fall 2019 Internship/Co-Op)

THE ROLE
Production Engineering comprises several roles, including Process Engineering, Equipment Engineering, Production Supervisor and Production Program Manager. Your application will be considered across all teams, depending on your skills and the team’s needs.
A process engineering intern will help implement, develop, and optimize production methodologies in the manufacturing operations of Tesla. Optimize product flow though the factory though process optimization that may include tool /fixture selection, line layouts, ergonomic study, material presentation, and other relevant factors. Interface with design, test, and quality engineering to solve problems, improve manufacturability, and implement continual improvement. Sustain products with cost reduction and yield improvements. Work with quality to compile and evaluate data to determine appropriate limits and variables for process or material specifications.
An equipment engineering intern on the production engineering team will be a part of operating, sustaining, and improving some of the most automated manufacturing equipment in the world. The expectation is that an intern will start with strengths in a given field (AUTOCAD, robotics, PLC Programming, vision, Python, HMI scripting, etc) and then learn other areas from those who work with them. This role requires capability across the board to sustain all parts of the automated equipment.
A production supervisor intern helps to lead, develop and shape a high performing production team. This position may be on an alternative work schedule and candidates must be shift flexible.
A production program manager intern will focus on business improvement activities with a specialty on Safety. The role will use historical safety data and proactive measures of work environment conditions to reduce the risk of incidents within the organization. Leveraging ergonomic measurement tools, industrial material handling practices, and problem-solving methodology the role will help build a program for sustainable and data-driven improvement to safety. They primarily will work alongside our EHS team to drive these improvements within the organization.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Analyze and optimize production processes to ensure safety while maximizing Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) in cost effective means while driving to achieve world-class quality levels.
  • Champion continuous improvement projects (CIP) to maximize yield, capacity, and capability.
  • Apply technical knowledge to innovate, design and develop processes, procedures, tooling, and assembly fixtures.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to develop, validate, and improve processes used in manufacturing and manufacturability of designs.
  • Assist in enabling data driven operational and financial decisions through predictive insights into tool and process performance, including integration of factory data systems and use of software such as MySQL, Python, R, JMP, Tableau and Ignition.
  • Utilize structured problem solving techniques such as Design of Experiments (DoE), Five Why (5W) and Eight Disciplines (8D).
  • Monitor and reduce process variation using techniques such as Statistical Process Control (SPC) and Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA).
  • Participate in the transition of a product from concept to pilot line production and into mass manufacturing.
  • Monitor and audit manufacturing processes to ensure product specifications and standards are achieved.
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of FMEAs and Control Plans.
  • Implement and support Lean manufacturing and 5S initiatives.
  • Develop and modify line layouts, including material flow, waste reduction, and ergonomics, utilizing Lean Manufacturing best practices.
  • Disposition Non-Conforming Material
  • Develop and train sustaining technicians
  • Assist in the training of operators as needed.

REQUIREMENTS
  • Currently working towards a BS, MS, or advanced degree in a relevant engineering program.
  • You must be self-managed and committed to working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Hands-on experience is a must.
