The Department of Wood Science and Engineering (WSE) invites applications for a full-time 1.00 FTE, 9-month, fixed term Instructor position.

The Department of Wood Science and Engineering (WSE) is a multidisciplinary program focused on science, technology, design, engineering, and business practices that help society sustainably meet our needs for renewable materials, and help ensure the global competitiveness of US business. Our mission is to discover the science, create the technology, and design the renewable materials, products and structures for future generations. We are one of the largest and most diverse renewable materials programs in North America.

The purpose of this position is to foster critical thinking, advance students’ knowledge and skills through the teaching of Renewable Materials courses. The incumbent is expected to provide an intellectual foundation for students concerning wood products, form and function concepts, machining, production, product design, and marketing topics.

This Instructor will be developing and delivering courses in Advanced CAD, Entrepreneurial Product Development, Computer-aided Manufacturing, managing wood shop operations; and leading wood shop safety.

Position Duties
80% – Develop and deliver curriculum for multiple undergraduate courses per year in Wood Science & Engineering that are designed to challenge students on topics related to wood products and/or renewable materials, including WSE 250 (Computer Aided Design), WSE 350 (Wood Machining), WSE 351 (Advanced CAD), WSE 352 (CAM for the CNC Router and Laser Engraver), WSE 450 (Entrepreneurial Product Development I), and WSE 451 (Entrepreneurial Product Development II).
Manage the academic wood shop and digital fabrication lab. Mentor undergraduate students.
Supervise hourly undergraduate employees and a graduate teaching assistant.
Provide safety training to students on related equipment and/or materials used in coursework and/or lab.

20% – Participate in departmental and college governance and provide service to the Department, College, or University as requested, and as time, interest and aptitude permit. Actively engage in professional development activities including attendance at workshops, meetings, and other related events.

Lead shop safety programs and safety training for WSE undergraduate students.

Minimum/Required Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Business, Science, Art, Design, or related field.
Classroom teaching experience.
Proficiency with computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM).
Familiarity with proper and safe handling of woodworking equipment.
A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
Experience with safety programs and training.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications
MFA, MA, or MDes in art or design related field.
Experience in teaching CAD/CAM at an undergraduate level.
Experience in product design and marketing.
Experience in designing/manufacturing with wood.
Experience in supervising hourly employees.
Experience teaching with woodworking and/or digital fabrication equipment.
Experience mentoring both students and professionals.
Experience developing innovative curriculum
