Summary:
American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests based in Norwood, Co, is seeking a Recreation Technician for 12 weeks to assist the Norwood Ranger District in a variety of work to assist the recreation program.

This opportunity is intended for an enthusiastic young professional with a well-developed working background in conservation, natural resources management, wilderness management, recreation management, or a similar field. The applicant should possess a passion for public land management and a professional interest in advancing their career towards natural resource management, policy, natural resources management, and/or wilderness.
Start Date: Early June (some flexibility)

End Date: 12 weeks from start

The Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests are a combination of separate National Forests located on the western slope of the Colorado Rockies. These three forests combined cover almost 3 million acres of National Forest System land in the central and southern Rocky Mountains, an area that lies south of the Colorado River and west of the Continental Divide with some of the most spectacular scenery in the Rockies.

The Forests vary in elevation from 5,800 feet above sea level in Roubideau Creek Canyon to 14,309 feet on Uncompahgre Peak. The Forests include spectacular features like the 355 foot high Bridal Veil falls; the Grand Mesa with over 300 lakes, one of the world's largest flat top mountains; and the Alpine Tunnel, once the highest railroad tunnel in North America.

Compensation:

$520/week living allowance. Typical work week will be 8-10 hours/day, 4-5 days/week. 

Housing: Provided by the USFS.

Position Description:

The member will assist in checking visitor use of recreation facilities. Monitor compliance with recreation area rules and regulations of parking, campfires, sanitation, use of picnic sites, or hunting and fishing. Cleans recreation areas and maintains improvements. Assist in constructing and/or maintaining trails. Public representative of the FS, reports violations to supervisor and answers routine questions for recreational activities.

Project Environment:

The work is performed in a Forest environment. The position requires a capacity for strenuous physical effort, such as walking and climbing over steep terrain and thick vegetation. Rain, snow, wind, or dust may be encountered. The work requires the use of safety equipment such as boots, goggles or safety glasses, hard hats, and gloves.

Qualifications:

Undergraduate degrees in natural resources or recreation preferred. Candidates seeking degrees in these fields, or candidates with Master's Degrees and an interest in a career in public lands management, are strongly encouraged to apply. Required:

  • Members must be US citizen or possess a green card
  • If driving a work vehicle, members must be 21+.
  • Ability and willingness to undergo a federal criminal background check is required
  • Must have a valid driver's license, clean driving record.
  • Ability to drive an [Agency or ACE] vehicle is required for this position. ACE will conduct a driving record check upon on-boarding and Members must be cleared by ACE to drive.
  • Members must have knowledge of forestry practices and techniques to perform recreation work assignments.
  • Members must have working knowledge of detailed recreation rules and regulations to assist Forest visitors, detect and report violations.
  • Members must have knowledge of basic communications to effectively meet and deal, on routine day-to-day matters, with coworkers and Forest visitors.
  • Members must have knowledge of basic procedures for cleaning and maintaining recreation areas, facilities and trails.
  • Members must have demonstrated skills and use of maintaining recreational areas, facilities and/or trails and hand and power tools.
  • Members must have a high a high fitness level and an interest in camping, with potential for backcountry work trips.
  • Must be able to work alone/in a small group with minimal supervision,adherence to instructions, procedures and use initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently.  
  • Experience and/or ability to learn use of GPS unit.
  • Must be able and willing to work outdoors and be capable of lifting 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely with with coworkers, Forest users/visitors, and local residents.resource professionals.
