Intern - Global Education

R4D’s internship program is designed to provide students and recent graduates with an opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge and training about our programs and projects in developing countries as well as supporting areas of R4D.

Internship Description and Educational Objectives:
What you will learn during this internship?
R4D is seeking an intern to join the R4D Global Education team. The Global Education intern will 1) contribute to new research for the Early Childhood Workforce Initiative, a global, multi-sectoral effort to equip decision makers with tools and resources to support the development of a quality early childhood workforce at scale, 2) support the analysis of qualitative and quantitative data for the evaluation of the Global Partnership for Education, a global partnership devoted to getting all children into school for a quality education, at country level, and 3) contribute to other initiatives/ projects as needed.

The candidate will gain the following educational knowledge and training by the end of this internship:
  • In-depth knowledge of key topics in global education – such as out-of-school children, youth skills and employability, early childhood development, literacy, sector planning, and education financing – as well as approaches the R4D Global Education team employs in its work
  • Familiarity with R4D’s programmatic work across the health, education, and nutrition portfolios.
  • Ability to tailor writing products to a diverse set of audiences (including education practitioners, researchers, and policymakers) using a variety of formats (such as formal program documents, blog posts, PowerPoint).
  • Experience working independently and collaboratively with a team in a fast-paced environment.
This internship is based in Washington, DC, and will report directly to the Program Officer for Early Childhood Development.

Responsibilities:
Responsibilities will encompass a range of tasks including, but not limited to:
  • Conducting desk reviews and other analysis on home visiting programs in one pilot country and providing support for the shared learning workshop.
  • Conducting quantitative and qualitative analysis of data collected from one GPE country evaluation.
  • Provide research and writing assistance on sections of the draft GPE country evaluation report.
  • Note-taking in high-level meetings or interviews, and synthesizing notes to identify key takeaways.
  • Drafting succinct written products for internal and external audiences.
  • Contributing to communications efforts. The Global Education intern will have the opportunity to write blog posts on a variety of education topics and will be encouraged to share interesting insights gained over the course of the internship with R4D’s global network.
  • Providing research and writing assistance on other projects, as needed.
  • Providing administrative support, as needed.

Eligibility & Requirements:
  • Candidates should be college/university undergraduate students with less than 2 years of work experience; or graduate students with less than 2 years of work experience.
  • Interns are expected to work 30-32 hours a week during the 3-month internship period.
 
Qualifications: 
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
  • Demonstrated experience and/or interest in international development and education
  • Excellent writing, editing, presentation, and inter-personal skills; strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to synthesize a large amount of information and present information in a way that is easily understood
  • Experience and/or interest in producing analytic products, including conducting research and writing for reports, blogs, and other publications.
  • Prior experience conducting literature reviews
  • High level of organization and attention to detail
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to set priorities and handle competing time and resource demands
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Enthusiasm, energy, good judgment, and humor
  • Proficiency in languages other than English, preferred but not required

Compensation:
  • This is a paid internship and R4D interns will receive $13.25/hourly. 

Academic Credit:
  • Awarding academic credit for an internship is at the discretion of your college or university. We are happy to assist you with providing appropriate information at your school’s request. Interns are responsible for making all arrangements for earning credit prior to the commencement of their internship.
