Postdoctoral Scientist Fellowship - Combat Casualty Care

Located on the San Antonio Military Medical Center campus, Joint Base Fort Sam Houston, Texas, NAMRU-SA serves as one of the leading research and development laboratories of the U.S. Navy. The Command's Mission is to conduct gap driven combat casualty care, craniofacial, and directed energy research to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of Department of Defense personnel engaged in routine and expeditionary operations. This is a unique opportunity for a talented scientist with experience in neuroscience, physiology, and/or cell and molecular biology to work in a dynamic and innovative environment to conduct gap driven combat casualty care and directed energy research to improve survival, operational readiness, and the safety of Department of Defense personnel.

The Naval Medical Research Unit is offering a learning opportunity to collaborate with a mentoring principal investigator. Under the direction of the principal investigator, the participant will:
• Collaborate in the formulation of research hypotheses, experimental design, conducting experiments, data acquisition, and interpretation.
• Performing evaluations and surgical procedures in small and large animal models.
• Performing assays to assess for neurological, cardiovascular/tissue perfusion, metabolic, immune/inflammatory, coagulation, and endothelial status, function and dysfunction. 
• Preparing and presenting findings internally and externally through briefings, seminars, professional conferences. 
• Preparing research funding proposals, IACUC protocols, technical reports, presentation materials, and manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals.
• Work cross-functionally in a multidisciplinary environment using small and large animal models, as well as relevant molecular techniques for sample processing.

Appointment Length
This ORISE appointment is for a twelve month period. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

Participant Benefits
Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by NAMRU-SA. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

Additional information that may be included if applicable:
While participants will not enter into an employment relationship with DOD or any other agency, this opportunity will require a suitability investigation/background investigation. Any offer made is considered tentative pending favorable outcome of the investigation.

Qualifications
Preferred Experience:
• Experience working with in vitro biological assays and/or cellular models of disease states.
• Experience working with and performing behavioral assessments and surgeries in animal models, including basic techniques such as blood vessel cannulation is a plus.
• Experience writing manuscripts and abstracts for professional conferences and peer-reviewed journals.
• Must be a U.S citizen.
• Must be eligible to receive secrete clearance.
