Research & Administrative Internship

Overview

This ten-week fall internship, beginning in September 2019, may be granted to students who are able to receive academic credit or external sponsorship. It is an opportunity for undergraduate students in their sophomore, junior, or senior years of college, recent college graduates, or graduate students with an interest in international development, to apply principles and theories learned in the classroom to the research which is being conducted at Brookings.
 
This internship provides a pre-professional learning experience that offers meaningful, practical work experience related to the student’s field of study or career interest. It will provide an opportunity for career exploration and development as well as a chance to learn new skills
 
Applicants must be willing to commit to a minimum number of hours per week (no less than 20 hours per week, during regular business hours), with some flexibility around an academic course schedule. 
 


Responsibilities

Learning Objectives
 
The intern will gain exposure to a broad set of policy topics while developing their analytical thinking, organizational, and writing skills. Applicants should expect a range of responsibilities, broadly defined under the following categories:
 
General research and writing: The intern will assist with short-term research and other projects. Examples include literature review, conducting data searches, database updates, bibliographic support, fact-checking, and contributing to blogs, research briefs, and presentations.
 
Event Coordination and Administrative Support: During the internship period, there will be a large global meeting for which the intern will provide support through drafting invitations, tracking registration, communication with external stakeholders, and coordinating travel. The intern will also support the scholar by creating PowerPoints, drafting public remarks, and scheduling meetings.
 
Interns will have the opportunity to attend internal meetings, local think tank events, professional development workshops, and public Brookings events as well as participate on Brookings sports teams and network with other interns throughout the Institution.


Qualifications

Education/Knowledge/Skills:
 
Applicants must be current undergraduate students in their sophomore, junior, or senior years of college, recent college graduates, or graduate students who have studied or are studying in a relevant field (i.e. political science, international relations, public policy, foreign policy, etc.). Applicants should have a demonstrated interest in public policy, and ideally implementing the SDGs.
Applicants must have some knowledge of qualitative, quantitative, and/or mixed methods research, and experience in conducting literature searches and review. Strong written and verbal communication skills required. Additionally, applicants must have prior meeting or event coordination experience. Experience with international meeting and travel coordination a plus.
 
Additional Information:
 
Successful completion of a background investigation is required for interning at Brookings.
 
To be eligible for this internship, applicants must receive either academic credit or financial sponsorship from their university or another external organization and, once selected, be able to provide proof of such receipt.
