Internship - NARAL Opposition Research Fall 2019

Summary
The intern will work with the Research team to help create, coordinate, and archive research projects across NARAL’s national and state offices, studying the radical anti-choice movement’s strategies and key actors. The intern will be responsible for executing administrative tasks related to our projects’ success, and will get hands-on experience in both long-term and rapid response research in conjunction with ongoing reproductive rights campaigns.

Location: Washington, DC
This position is: Internship, Hourly rate of $15.00/hr and $25 monthly metro stipend provided
Internship Date: Sept 3- with end date flexible on or after Dec 6th All interns will be required to attend an orientation the Sept 3rd
Reports To: Associate Research Director

Responsibilities
  • Monitor coverage of the radical anti-choice movement on traditional and social media platforms and produce daily summaries of the conversation;
  • Create new research briefs as needed, identifying the most effective narrative against a target and compiling, writing, and editing the research to present to internal stakeholders and coalition partners;
  • Maintain a calendar of major anti-choice events;
  • Maintain and update an internal, qualitative digital database that compiles existing research into a user-friendly, accessible system for the NARAL network;
  • Evaluate existing research products, finding opportunities to update and ensure we have the most accurate, actionable intelligence available;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Ability to work independently on in-depth research projects and demonstrate good judgement in prioritizing targets to achieve research objectives;
  • Interest in understanding the extreme anti-choice movement;
  • Record of performing qualitative research, either academically or professionally, is required;
  • Prior experience with opposition research, political or advocacy campaigns, or communications/media is preferable, but not necessary;
  • Knowledge of and strong commitment to reproductive rights issues and NARAL Pro-Choice America’s mission and goals;
  • Demonstrated writing skills, particularly in fast-paced environments;

Requirements
  • Currently enrolled in or recently completed an accredited undergraduate or graduate degree program;
  • Must be available at least 20 hours per week full time preferred;
  • A strong interest in the political process;
  • Strong research, analytical, written and oral communication skills;
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced collaborative environment;
  • Excellent attention to detail;
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and Google Drive;
  • General computer proficiency.
