Title: USDA Forest Service Trail Crew Individual Placement (2 positions)
Start/End Date: June 24th, 2019 - August 30th, 2019
Stipend:  $400/week (+Education Award) 
Term:  10 weeks 
Reports To:  USDA Forest Service - Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, Gunnison National Forests
Location:  Montrose, CO 81401
Status:  300-hour AmeriCorps Service Term

Southwest Conservation Corps’ Mission 
It is the mission of the Southwest Conservation Corps to empower individuals to positively impact their lives, their communities and the environment. 
 
Program Description: 
Join the Southwest Conservation Corps’ intern team and help the USDA Forest Service carry out it's mission to "sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the Nation's forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations"!
 
The Recreation Department of the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison National Forests focuses on providing recreational opportunities to the general public. This includes campgrounds, dispersed camping, trail maintenance, outfitter and guide permitting, and public contacts on the forest. The Trail Crew Individual Placements will focus on trail work for non-motorized trails and includes cutting out trees, water bar maintenance, and benching trails as needed. The goal is to improve over 500 miles of trail this summer season. Essential functions and responsibilities include:
  • Work with supervisor on general trail maintenance expectations
  • Keep a detailed log of miles worked, trees cut out, and waterbars maintained or built
  • Record any areas that need special attention, along with signs that need to be updated or replaced.
  • Training in the following will be provided:
  • Saw training
 
 
General Qualifications:  
The successful applicant must be  self-motivated and able to work independently with limited supervision after the initial training period. The applicant must be able to maneuver and operate in a mixture of office and field work. This can include long periods of standing or walking on rough, uneven ground, bending, crouching, and stooping.  Applicant must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record. Prior to starting this position a government security background clearance will be required.

  • Chain Saw Training
  • Cross-cut Training

  • Birth Certificate or Passport
  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Permanent Resident Card, INS form I-551
  • Alien Registration Card, INS form I-551
  • A passport indicating that the INS has approved it as temporary evidence of lawful admission for permanent residence
  • A departure record ( INS 194) indication that the INS has approved it as temporary evidence of lawful admission for permanent residence
  • Driver's License
