Description
The sponsoring research facility for this opportunity is the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Silver Spring, MD. The research will be carried out in both Centers (Infectious Disease Research and Military Psychiatry and Neuroscience) under the mentorship of the director for science education. For more information visit www.wrair.army.mil

The Wound Infections Department (WID) at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research has a unique research opportunity in the lab the Host-Pathogen Relationship group. WID’s mission is to combat wound infections caused by multidrug resistant bacteria. The participant will have the opportunity to engage and collaborate in a highly dynamic, multi-disciplinary team on several projects aimed to understand host pathogen interactions in complex trauma. The participant will have the opportunity to learn and contribute to ongoing efforts involving in vivo models of infection and conduct studies to evaluate host responses to wound infections caused by variety of pathogens. The participant will further analyze host responses following therapeutic intervention and/or perform in vitro assays on a collection of multi-drug resistant bacteria.

Appointment Length
This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

Participant Benefits
Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by WRAIR. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

Qualifications
B.A., B.S., or Master's in microbiology, biology, or other related scientific field of study.

Training or experience in small animal handling and surgical procedures is highly preferred.

Training or experience in large animal surgeries, basic molecular and immunology techniques (i.e. ELISA, PCR, nucleic acid extraction, gel electrophoresis) and working in GLP laboratory is desired.
