What is a Mental Health Navigator - Peer Support Specialist II – Part Time?


The Mental Health Navigator - Peer Support Specialist position works within the Mental Health Connect (MHC) ministry at Bethlehem Lutheran Church and is responsible for connecting with referred individuals and providing short-term direct service. Engage with individuals served by utilizing therapeutic interpersonal skills, employing person centered and trauma informed strategies. In addition, this position is responsible for providing coverage at faith community and educational events. This position will work 16 hours per week and is hourly nonexempt. This position must be able to work evenings and Sundays.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Assess individual and family resource needs and barriers to mental health care.
  • Provide one-time service to walk-ins or referrals for MHC intake.
  • Assist to develop and implement a plan to achieve the desired outcomes, such as include insurance, therapy, counseling, or assistance programs.
  • Help peers identify abilities, strengths and assets.
  • Build community resources and developing relationships with community agencies and organizations.
  • Identify barriers to participation in community activities.
  • Support peers to connect with professional supports and services.
  • Conduct follow-up calls or visits to the client in order to see how the plan is progressing and determine if adjustments are needed.
  • Document services provided utilizing Vail Place's Electronic Health Records database.
  • Find and maintain referral relationships with providers and community resources.
  • Communicate with site staff as needed, especially coordinating shared schedule with other Navigators.
  • Participate in MHC Collaborative education and outreach, such as publicizing program services at collaborative and community sites.

  • Embodies cultural competence and emotional intelligence.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED/equivalent
  • Primary diagnosis of mental illness and be a current or former consumer of mental health services
  • Successfully completed the DHS-approved Certified Peer Specialist training program and certification exam
  • Must have and maintain a valid Minnesota Driver’s License, maintain automobile coverage and have access to an automobile
  • Must meet one of the following:
  • Is qualified as a mental health practitioner as defined by the State of Minnesota, or
  • Has at least 6,000 hours of supervised experience in the delivery of peer services to people with mental illness, or
  • Has at least 4,000 hours of supervised experience in the delivery of services to people with mental illness and an additional 2,000 hours of supervised experience in the delivery of peer services to people with mental illness.
