Position Summary:
The College of Arts and Sciences at the University at Buffalo is seeking an Associate Director of Communications and Staff Writer. This is a full-time staff position responsible for writing timely, top-level, high-use content, such as features for the CAS home page, releases, articles, student, faculty and alumni profiles in a deadline-driven environment.

A key member of the Communications Team, the Associate Director of Communications and Staff Writer will serve as a writer and editor working closely with the Assistant Dean for Marketing and Communications, the Creative Director, Web Developer, Assistant Director of Communications and Marketing and Communications Coordinator, and Dean’s office colleagues. The ideal candidate will be dedicated to writing impactful stories that highlight the College, enhances our reputation, attracts and retain students and faculty, engages alumni and the community at large.
The candidate must have the ability to distill faculty research into articles that can be presented to internal and external stakeholders and mainstream media in concise, easy-to-understand ways and assist in publicizing CAS events and accomplishments via news releases and through other relevant media.

In addition to writing new content, the Associate Director of Communications and Staff Writer will curate and edit existing content and assist Dean’s office colleagues and CAS departments. The candidate will help to ensure consistency of message, as well as adherence to UB brand standards. The candidate must be a collaborative team player and possess a high level of tact and diplomacy.
Additional Duties are, but not limited to:
• Compose written content for the College of Arts and Sciences’ websites, print collateral and various digital projects and social media.
• Generate and develop story ideas, participate in relevant meetings and strategic communications planning and campaign execution.
• Collaborate in identifying, creating, and executing writing opportunities and manage projects
• Cultivate relationships with faculty and staff partners across the college and university
• Develop media strategies for disseminating multi-channel media content, and follow-through with campaign tactics.
• Create content and work regularly with web authoring tool, UB Content Management System and other new and emerging media.
• Monitor content and project requests for efficacy, and internal assessment of resource utilization.
• Manage staff and student other content developers and vendors.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s required, in communications, marketing, business, journalism or other relevant areas. A degree outside of these areas but with relevant work experience will be considered. 
• 3 years of professional experience as a writer or content creator.
• A demonstrated ability in editorial planning, writing, editing and interviewing skills including the ability to adapt tone and style to different media channels and for different audiences. 
• A proven understanding and appreciation of the mission of liberal arts education, and the role of higher education in society. 
• Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills required.
• Proficiency with in MS Office

Preferred Qualifications:
• Masters preferred in communications, marketing, business, journalism or relevant areas. 
• Experience with the Adobe Suite, preferred.
• Fluency with the Associated Press style manual.
• 4 or more years of professional experience as a writer or content creator preferred.
