Graduate Student - Coagulation and Cellular Therapeutics

The U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research (USAISR), located in San Antonio, TX, is one of six research laboratories within the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command of the U.S. Army Futures Command. The Institute is the Army's lead research laboratory for improving the care of combat casualties. The mission of the Institute is to "Optimize Combat Casualty Care". The USAISR is offering a research opportunity focusing on coagulation and blood research. The participant will be given an opportunity to collaborate with research scientists at the USAISR and the University of Texas at San Antonio. Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will contribute to literature research, manuscript writing and subsequent submissions for peer review and publication. During this research opportunity, the participant will receive training in monitoring and analyzing the endothelial dysfunction and coagulation function parameters. In addition, the participant will learn to perform radiation dose-response survival study using a rat model.

The hypothesis to be tested is that cell therapy can reduce or mitigate the negative effects of low level radiation exposure on response to and recovery from traumatic injury.

Research overview for Coagulation & Blood Research Capabilities is as follows:
- Translational research that directly supports military operations
- World-class laboratory facilities for military operational medicine, trauma surgery, transfusion medicine
- Multidisciplinary scientific staff with international collaboration network

Appointment Length
This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

Participant Benefits
Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by USAISR. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

Qualifications
Bachelors degree in biology or related science and background in blood and coagulation research.
