Vocational ESL Intern

SCOPE OF INTERN WORK:
The IRC provides Vocational ESL and Employment Services courses four days per week to help students build their English language capabilities and search for employment. Interns assist in all aspects of the VESL/ES courses, including but not limited to the following:

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Teach a multicultural and multilevel classroom of new English speakers
  • Teach English language skills (including grammar, conversation, reading and writing, and listening/comprehension)
  • Follow the IRC’s VESL Curriculum for Track 1 and Track 2
  • Assess, track and report student attendance and comprehension progress
  • Invite participation in interactive, culturally and age appropriate hands-on activities
  • Teach cultural and social values of the U.S.
  • Help students become self-sufficient by teaching real-life language and job skills
  • Assist in job search process with students (both online and in person)
  • Assist clients with job-related communications (ie. emails, cover letters, resumes)
  • Practice interviewing techniques and skills
  • Develop supplement materials and maintain files and records
  • Other duties as requested by the VESL Instructor or Employment Services staff

REQUIREMENTS:
  • Positive Attitude, Energetic
  • Patience and empathy for students
  • Flexibility to work with a variety of student needs
  • Experience teaching or training preferred, but not required

This position reports to the VESL Instructor.
  • This is an unpaid internship.
  • Work related driving is eligible for reimbursement at the IRS Charitable Rate. 
  • Internships are available for current college students starting in their second year, graduate students, and graduates less than 2 years post-graduation. Course credit is available if the student coordinates with their university and confirms the appropriate paperwork with the Volunteer Coordinator.

COMMITMENT:
Hours per week: 15-30 hours per week, during IRC's regular business hours of 9 am-5 pm, M - F
Duration: 4-6 months, or 240 hours
IRC is committed to working with student schedules. As such, we are flexible with accommodating time off for midterms and school holidays, and altering time availability with changing class schedules.
